It was not 'canceled.' There are currently no plans for a 6th season but Fox has said that could change, which has pretty much been the official word since before season 5 began.

It's funny to me how four of the best shows of the last few years: Dexter, Breaking Bad, Sons of Anarchy and Justified...all ended within a year and a half of each other.
