Costumer's Replies

Ok, we're done. The concept "no prescribed range or box within which fiction HAS to operate." reveals the problem. I suggest you take a course in fiction writing. What many people refuse to acknowledge is that actors act. The age of the actor is not relevant to the age of the character. Now, if you thing Helen Benson looks too young, that is a different question. But I don't care if she is 15 or 110 if she carries the character she is playing. And for the record, I had no issues. She did not look to young to have a child in the 10-12 age range. "suspension of disbelief" does not require acceptance of everything. Indeed, suspension should be limited. It is generally a rule of good fiction that as much "real world" as possible be maintained, especially in fantastic fiction. By your definition, "willing to suspend disbelief" we should be okay if the ship Discovery sprouts wings and starts dancing on the waves. Really? My argument is that people who ask questions in a respectful manner deserve respect in return and an answer in if one is available. MrMovies's argument is that people who ask questions in a respectful manner deserve ridicule and dismissal of their inquiry. Which do you think is the correct argument? It is. For you. I've spent 3 days, on and off, considering how to respond to this. Quite simply I don't see any way to answer such an arrogant, supercilious and mean-spirited point of view. I hope that your omniscient self is quite happy as I cannot comprehend how you can have friendly relations with us mere mortals who, regardless of how educated we may be, do not share the quality of omniscience. And, btw, I'm not trying to IMPOSES anything. I never said or implied that you shouldn't. I said I didn't like it in the context and what I would like instead. And yes, it was normal conversation, until you made it not. Sigh, I HATE political correctness. I don't like alien in this context because the non-human species are NOT aliens. They are, as far as we can tell citizens of the Empire or the Republic (depending on which movie we are in.) They, therefore, do not really fit in as Aliens any more than a US citizen who was born in Italy, Nairobi or Tokyo is. You may be correct. The number I used I looked up. I would note, however, that Eureka and NYC on not at the same latitude so a line between them is diagonal. Also, is the number you used "as the crow flies" or by road. If the latter the mileage can increase due to the necessity of roads. Either way, the main answer to the OP is that the US is considerably "wider" than 2000 miles. We will have to agree to disagree. My mental age is fine, thank you. I embrace technology I find helpful and don't use what I don't. I have no issues if others do. I understand what you are saying about technological presentation. I simply believe you are incorrect. I cannot reconcile flat screens to holograms; especially since Next Gen and later HAD holograms and didn't use them for communications. Why do I have any interests in your personal preferences? Why does anyone post any opinion here. Because its a discussion board. I don't insist you follow my preferences. I made a comment. A contrary comment was made. I defended my preference. That is a normal conversation. I haven't watched the series, though I have read a few of the stories. I am curious about your comment that St. Mary's is an unusual name for a Roman Catholic Church. My Diocese is not overly large and there are twenty parishes with the name St. Mary. I doubt that number is unusual. Why do you think it is strange? And to be clear, I am not referring to the many titles of Mary that are often chosen as parish names as well. I mean, literally, St. Mary. Not counting Alaska and Hawaii, of course. Just for information the US is not quite 2700 miles wide at its widest. I think the word does have some use. But I largely agree with you. Though, again, I prefer species to race. But your mileage may vary. Why? Its not impolite. Its not a firebomb. Its a question. He didn't realize that there was an Edsel between the two Henries. Completely reasonable. Everyone doesn't know every fact of history. I don't see any reason to insult someone who is asking a question. He wasn't disrespectful or throwing ad hominem accusations at anyone. Precisely. Yes, I know the definition, thank you. I've known it since I was 6, which would be in the sixties. My opinion is based that in a society which seems to be very integrated with numerous species that people are not likely to see a Wookie, a Bothan, a Calamari as alien because they are part of the society. Even in our own society, we (well, most of us) would restrict the word alien to someone who has entered a country illegally. We don't refer to our fellow citizens, whether of African, Chinese, Japanese, Italian, or (insert any and all other countries/ethnicities) as aliens. As I see the Star Wars universe, that is the case. Probably Italian, since Lee Iacocca was Italian. "Wop" is a derogatory term for Italians, though they sometimes will use it between themselves. (I am largely, though not completely, of Italian descent)
