His story was sad , no doubt. But still, that dude basically killed 3-4 innocent people (the mustache policeman and the inmates). And he was about to kill the main character and two of the other inmates.
Considering the death he caused, it just felt difficult to find him acceptable at the end, which makes the main character’s decision even more idiotic
I thought the same thing. The crime done to Miguel's family was horrific, but so was his approach to finding resolution. From his perspective though, I think he saw everyone involved in the criminal justice system (police and criminals) as part of the problem. Grief is a terrible thing and it can really mess up a person's brain, which is exactly what happened to him.

and yet we find it much easier to get behind criminals like the gang in "Heat" who will kill the odd cop who is in the way because they are "professionals" (big wup)
...and they're doing purely for greed , not for something as noble as giving their daughter a final resting place.
Hanna basically told McCauley what could happen in that great coffee shop scene...
