‘Nomadland’ is the Oscars frontrunner. But its depiction of Amazon has stirred controversy

What controversy?

How dare Amazon give them jobs, right?

honestly, one of my bigger takeaways from nomadland was that i thought it made working at an amazon warehouse look like a pretty good job. looked better than some of the jobs i've had over the years.

it's not easy to get by on seasonal jobs, no doubt, but there are lots of people who take those gigs and are grateful for the opportunity i'm sure.

If an Amazon worker could bide their time like McDormand's character did in Nomadland, it would be swell. Realistically, Amazon factory workers must make their productivity quotas or face written warnings and then termination. For example, in a 10-hour shift, fulfillment center workers must package 2,000 units (4 items per minute), and scan 4,000 items (8 per minute). McDormand's character surely would have been issued a TOT ("time off task") and subsequently fired for taking more than the allotted 15 seconds per unit.

IMO, not only did this film glorify van dwelling--it seemed to have exalted Amazon.

This is 100% correct. I worked in an automotive parts warehouse for about 5 years, and while the production standards and pressure to perform weren’t anything like it is at Amazon, no one would have gotten away with the lollygagging depicted in the movie.

Those jobs are temporary.

That is shocking. I'd expect that place to run 24/7.

reply

The places run 24/7 but there are seasonal peaks of activity.

ah. makes sense. thx
