They wouldn't have had to try very hard considering how the other characters in this movie pretty much instantly believed everything they were told.

They probably didn't, assuming he didn't make it back as the ending was ambiguous. If he didn't, it'd probably be left as a distraught missing person due to the cancer.

He disappeared as there was no Synchronic left for him to go back to the present. He could have sticked to Brianna and joined the present moment together as it was shown in the dog experiment but he was busy fighting the man with the rifle so Brianna made it alone and he disappeared in time.

I think that he could have held on to her in the 34 seconds he had after the hillbilly showed up.

Yeah, with 34 seconds, he could have pretended not to have seen the guy or just coward on the other side of the rock or pretended to pass out, etc.

Or he could have told the hillbilly he belonged to the girl's family and stayed with her.

The ending seemed forced.
