One thing that always made me curious is how everyone was pretty certain Obi Wan was dead until ANH.

Tarkin seemed very confident.

But, if ROTS is any indication, there was no reason to believe Obi Wan was dead. Everyone that mattered knew Obi Wan defeated Vader in Mustafar.

Obi Wan was relatively young, definitely younger than Tarkin and Palpatine.

Yet Obi Wan being alive seemed like a shock in ANH.

Maybe something needs to happen to give the impression that Obi Wan died before ANH.

Well the story goes that after the events of ROTS, the empire and Vadar hunt down and kill the remaining jedi. So possibly something happened where they think they killed Obi Wan but he somehow survived
