I just finished this film. It was ok, a bit of a waste of time, but here’s my question. Did I miss where it explained why Tom was sick? Was it from being in the hole? Cigarettes? I watched the entire thing, but somehow must have missed that part.
Them both getting sickly and dying is suppose to be part of the cycle of life that exists in this world. I agree, the movie is somewhat of a letdown on many levels when it could have been more interesting like taking an alien abduction or Matrix-type of storyline.
My guess is this isn't a natural environment for humans. Everything was created artificially, the food was tasteless and making them feel sick, but they had no other choice but to eat it. Even the sky wasn't real with artificial clouds and a sun. Also he was down in that hole everyday digging strange dirt that had a weird substance in it, he was breathing that in so I assumed it made him get sicker quicker.
You can put any lifeform in an artificial environment that isn't 100% compatible and I can guarantee that it wouldn't stay alive very long. Whatever these creatures are they only needed humans to live a specific amount of time to raise thier young.
I can’t remember him coughing before he started digging. I first noticed it when he gets in the hole, coughs and we see the yellow rocks in the heap next to the hole
Actually did Tom start coughing after he shut the kid in the car? I think it became clear thenhe would not are for the child and was in effect killed off.
I was thinking that with his digging he was getting closer to the core of that artificial environment and that it probably was radioactive or something. That would explain why Gemma died some time after him since she wasn't directly exposed like he was.
Wherever Tom and Gemma were, their only purpose was to keep the creature alive until it could leave the nest. "Release" in the creature's terms meant death. The food they ate and even the air they breathed was not meant to sustain them in the long-term.
