My guess is this isn't a natural environment for humans. Everything was created artificially, the food was tasteless and making them feel sick, but they had no other choice but to eat it. Even the sky wasn't real with artificial clouds and a sun. Also he was down in that hole everyday digging strange dirt that had a weird substance in it, he was breathing that in so I assumed it made him get sicker quicker.
You can put any lifeform in an artificial environment that isn't 100% compatible and I can guarantee that it wouldn't stay alive very long. Whatever these creatures are they only needed humans to live a specific amount of time to raise thier young.
I have to agree, when I was seven years old (the year this came out) I thought this film was hilarious, but I tried watching it again this week as I had such fond memories, but it was so painful to watch. It wasn't funny at all and the jokes were really terrible, and the comedy hasn't aged well at all. I actually had to turn it off halfway through.
If there was ever a case of nostalgia clouding judgement, this was most definitely it.
