I really wanted to like this movie... (Spoilers)

I've been following this movie for some time before it was released and was pretty hyped about it. I knew I had to lower my expectations though, because of the films limited budget I wasn't expecting a masterpiece. Just a fun, dumb gorefest which is what I got. Unfortunately, the story and situations became too dumb for me to ignore.

The whole thing about the town sacrificing people to the animatronics so they don't attack the town doesn't make sense. Why dont they just kill the animatronics? It doesn't seem to difficult since Nic Cage's character could do it with his bare hands. And then all the animatronics fighting him one at a time. He's killing them right in front of the other ones and they just stand there. Did they only have the power to spawn a few at a time?

Those were pretty much my major gripes with the story. I didn't really laugh at all and after a while it was getting pretty annoying that Nice Cage wouldn't say a word. You have Nicolas Cage one of the best actors you could ask for this kind of role, and you're not even gonna have him say any cool one-liners or even say something at the end?

Not necessarily. He needed that power juice to amp up, and plenty of duct tape for his wounds. It wasn't like he got of it unscathed.

Not to mention that he needed the entire bag of drinks to beat the crap out of Willy, since Willy had the power of teleportation and could disorient you with his song and lights. The average person would have died after that first attack... but not Nick Cage.

Yes, actually. It was a ritual, remember? Not all of them could be active at once, and different ones came alive to feed at a time.

You had to wait for the spirits to awaken, otherwise they were just standard 'ole animatronics. That's why Nick Cage prevented the one Mexican chick from stabbing them when they WEREN'T activated because it would have been a waste, and they likely would have just regenerated.

I didn't know about the 'ritual' only letting a few of them be alive at a time. I must have missed that. But yeah, Nic Cage did get a little bit fucked up. But I would imagine the town having all kinds of weapons to take on the animatronics. I know that's not part of the narrative though, so we have to believe that the town was so frightened of their power that they couldn't do anything.

No, you didn't miss anything. That's usually how it works with the occult stuff -- it's like a trope based on real life accounts of similar incidents. Even in places supposedly haunted by lots of spirits, there's always just one or two active spirits doing stuff at a time. I guess it takes a lot of ectogenetic energy to do stuff? Not sure, but the one-at-a-time thing is just standard fare practice.

Keep in mind that Nick Cage still didn't kill all of them. Like Siren Sara still came back, so there's the possibility that if they didn't properly destroy them and the building that they would still haunt the town, and worse, leave Willy's Wonderland and reside elsewhere where they couldn't as easily be contained.

We don't really know the full extent of their powers because Nick Cage was just so much stronger than them, but the townsfolk obviously where nowhere near as strong as him, and I doubt their weapons would have been very effective, especially against Willy and his teleportation abilities (also keep in mind that Willy's normal attacks could rip you in half with one swipe. So a lot of townsfolk would have likely died trying to take on the gang, and I doubt anyone would have been able to survive Willy's attacks. Nick Cage managed to tank multiple attacks from Willy and only survived thanks to the power-up drink).

It really was a lame setup. Assuming you had a building full of demonic muppets why would you sacrifice people to them instead of just pours some gas on the building and burning it to the ground.

Absolutely, there are huge plotholes. It's also the sort of movie that doesn't care. If it doesn't care, why should a viewer? It's kinda "critic-proof" that way. Yes, there are plotholes, yes, there are stupid characters, but does that matter? To quote Harrison Ford, "It ain't that kind of movie."
