Prequel Trash Creeping Into "The Mandalorian"

I'm talking about that dumb looking pod engine Timothy Oliphant was riding. Doug Chiang's designs don't fit the Star Wars aesthetic. This is the problem with having prequel Lucas involved in The Mandalorian.

reply

What was wrong with that? I liked it. It was instantly recognisable.

And the pod race was one of the better things about Phantom Menace anyway.

Simply because you don't like TPM, and I am no big fan of it, does not mean its off limits for stuff like this.

Little touches like this are one of the reasons The Mandalorian is so enjoyable.

reply

I know TPM isn't off limits, but The Mandalorian would be much better if it WAS off limits.

reply

Rubbish. You can easily take good elements from bad movies, and use them for little references in other areas.

reply

Agreed. I didn't like the preqs and very little of the seqs but some references and tech are cool crossovers (as long as I don't hear the word "midichlorians")

reply

Agreed. Phantom Menace had many flaws, but the pod race was definitely not one of them. It's probably the best part of the movie by far.

Gosh OP, I wonder wonder who recently said this in another thread in response to a percieved critique of this show......

They're doing a pretty good job recreating the aesthetic of the original Star Wars trilogy, while working in aspects of the prequels and sequels. Something you have to do in order to remain part of canon. It makes sense that pod racing hardware would be sitting around on Tatooine, to be picked up and repaired - or bought from merchants or Jawas.

reply

It was nowhere to be found on Tatooine in Star Wars 1977 or Return of the Jedi anywhere. Leave that crap in the prequels only.

reply

They hadn't come up with it yet, obviously, but our look at life on Tatooine was brief enough that you can believe there's lots of stuff we didn't see. No one ever had a conversation with sandpeople before The Mandalorian either. Their vocal chords are obviously a little different from ours, luckily Mando has his helmet mic and onboard translator to interpret.

This show is part of the whole progression of Star Wars. They're not ignoring any of it. As it goes on we're obviously going to be seeing the rise of the First Order, with Mof Gideon and other former Imperial bigwigs trying to claw their way back into power. Makes sense that they'd operate in the outer rim of the galaxy where the New Republic's authority is thinner on the ground (their version of the Third World).

reply

If they had fucking Gungans in the episode then you'd have a point. Pod engine is literally nothing, not even a blip on my radar.

reply

I thought it was cool seeing the Marshall driving a re-purposed podrace engine, and it looked suspiciously like one of Anakin's. However, I would like to point out that it did not impact the story very much beyond showing how resourceful the Marshall or whichever mechanic he bought the bike from was very clever in using old parts.

reply

I hate the prquels, but didn't notice this. Nor do I care.

reply

what would you think if they went to coroscant on the show?

reply

at least the prequels are real star wars movies...
