Is it okay to distort history in any movie or only the ones that are politically correct?

I've seen a number of people on this movie's forum defend the gross historical distortions of The Woman King with with the claim that it's okay because it's just for entertainment and other movies do this. But if that is true are historical distortions in movies for the sake of entertainment really okay for all movies or is it just okay for politically correct movies? The Woman King is a very politically correct movie since it's about empowered black women and that crucial facet of the movie may make it a lot easier for many people to accept its historical distortions.

But what about a movie like Song of the South, which by now is completely politically incorrect? That movie is generally considered to distort history because it portrays black sharecroppers in the South during Reconstruction as being joyous and happy with the conditions they lived under. Song of the South is widely looked down upon as illegitimate just because of the emotional outlooks of the black characters in it, especially Uncle Remus. But Song of the South is only meant to entertain. Should the fact that it's just meant to entertain mean that its historical distortions are okay?

Most non-fiction films are distorted to some extent.

Hidden Figures
JFK
Amistad
The King's Speech
Pocohontas
The Patriot
300
Argo
The Last Samurai
Pearl Harbor
Braveheart
The Sound of Music

Some are much worse than others. If I want to see history on the big screen, then all of the above are very disappointing. If I want to see a decent flick, then they are all okay, except JFK. It super duper sucks at all levels.

You haven't answered the question. Is it okay for all films to distort history or just the ones that are politically correct?

reply

Yes it is okay. No one is capable is capable of telling the 100% truth about history when putting it on screen. They can do better though.

All of the films on my list above are guilty of putting style over substance.

Ranb,

It's not a matter of capability. It's a matter of intention. Political correctness or the lack of it in movies is a matter of intention. Do the intentions of those who choose to distort history in movies matter?

reply

I think the producers of most films want to put their own mark on their work even if it means it is less accurate.

Yes it matters. Given the history of inaccurate films, why do you care?

When does the historical accuracy of a film matter to you and when does it not?

reply

JFK is great film making. It's pure fantasy though.
