Citing the failure of WW 1984 is a bad faith argument. It was released peak COVID lockdowns, on Christmas Day and had a day-and-date release on HBO max. It never stood a chance.
The truth is the day of the movie star is waning. Not many stars these days guarantee box office success. Black Adam (2022) flopped even though The Rock is the second most cited "I'd go to the cinema to see a movie if he's in it" actor. The Mummy (2017) flopped even though it had Tom Cruise. Not one person is a guarantee of a smash hit.

I agree about your point on movie stars. Personally, I go based on plot and other factors, not who’s in it.
