I liked it better when...minor spoiler

I liked the idea of a regular guy having to go out and kick ass. I liked it less when I found out he is some secret John Wick type.

reply

But then how do you explain the reason a random regular guy can kick so many asses? The only way is to make him a secret John Wick type. It's even the same thing with Taken, years before John Wick.

reply

Yes they would need to tone down the ass kicking. Different type of movie. Odenkirk does John Wick does not grab my attention as much as Odenkirk the underdog fights long odds and thugs.

reply

Then you would like Death Sentence starring Kevin Bacon! He is an insurance office worker that begins his descent to fight the evil gang member thugs who brutally murdered his son at a gas station for no reason other than to "initiate" a new gang member.

GOOD MOVIE...BACON GETS HIS ASS KICKED CONSISTANTLY.

Awesome James Wan flick! Needs a proper blu-ray release of the uncut version in the U.S.

I prefer the rated version, as I liked John Goodmans scenes to end with Kevin Bacon buying the guns and leaving. I didnt like seeing Goodman go to warn his son about Kevin Bacon, it made no sense for his character. The only rational reason I can think of is in case Bacon DIDNT succeed in killing his son, then Goodman could say "I sold him the guns for profit, and then warned you didnt I"? So his son wouldnt go after him next. But even then it still doesnt make sense when Goodman could just have killed Bacon then and there.

reply

Yeah I agree that bit is a contradiction. Perhaps Goodman's character changes his mind? But yeah it's iffy. That's why it's good to have both versions. I'm a bit of a completionist with that kind of thing so like to have all possible versions of a film (a couple of times resigning to well-done bootlegs). However, in regards to Death Sentence specifically, even the theatrical version doesn't have a proper Region A Blu-ray release that I've been able to find, which is a shame. There is a Denmark Blu-ray that some claim will play on Region A players even though it's marked as Region B on the cover, and I've considered, like I've done with a couple of foreign flicks with no Region A release, getting the U.K. release and cracking the Region code then burning my own Region-free disc, but so far haven't gone there yet for Death Sentence, hoping an official one will be released.

I looked into it and its bizarre this movie does not have an american region bluray release. It baffles me when some movies are not bluray released when they really deserve one.

Thats my go to site for books and movies. They have some good deals on there and they display all releases at the bottom. Just Region B bluray for that film...

Yeah, it's strange. There are some cases where the director has a lot of control and has roadblocked things, or who keeps tinkering with new versions while suppressing older versions, or sometimes trying to bury the release of their film entirely, or are just dragging their feet on HD updates (e.g. Michael Mann, James Cameron, etc.) I can't find an explanation for the Death Sentence situation, though, other than maybe it just fell through the cracks somehow.

Maybe Shout Factory! will get its hands on it someday. They've restored some pretty rare stuff over the years, many of it horror. But one of their more impressive efforts was the rarely before seen cut footage restored back into the animated film Plague Dogs, released under their Shout Select! banner. Took them several years to track down a good source.

Nice site. Going to have to bookmark that.

I figured you would like the site! Im happy to share it.

I wish they would release the sci-fi television series First Wave on DVD and Bluray. Its a three season show and they only released season one on dvd...the rest you would be lucky to track down VHS xD

That brings back memories. I miss those 90s and early 2000s Canadian shows (I was able to watch in syndication in the U.S.) like First Wave, Earth: Final Conflict, Forever Knight, ReGenesis, Poltergiest: The Legacy, and especially Highlander: The Series and The Secret Adventures of Jules Verne (which SciFi picked up and aired), or even some of the shows on early UPN like Nowhere Man, or Werewolf on a very fledgling FOX network, and not long after another of my favorites Friday The 13th: The Series. Of course, there was the grand Babylon 5 on PTEN.

They were low budget, and some were a complete miss, but many of them had interesting, creative stories and characters that worked well within the constraints. There's been similar shows more recently like the Canadian/SyFy series Continuum, or Travellers on Netflix, but too many these days, despite (or perhaps because of) there being a much larger span of content, and despite (or perhaps in some cases because of) having bigger budgets, seem to possess less creativity and charm. Or, maybe I'm just older now so little seems new anymore.

Good luck with First Wave. Here's hoping it eventually gets released in its entirety. I do see some bootlegs of the entire series out there, but most likely those are pulled from VHS recordings and will be of questionable quality. Before they got an official release, I tried something like that with the 80s Nickelodeon show The Mysterious Cities of Gold, also The Mighty Orbots and The Real Ghostbusters, and they were adequate at best, so its risky.

Wow you just named off several shows I enjoyed! I purchased each season of Forever Knight back in 2017 off ebay (season three was hardest to find and cost the most but I got lucky) and then just recently they did an entire series release collection on DVD. So there is some sliver of hope for First Wave collection in the future : )

Highlander series was fun to watch and Earth Final Conflict? I had completely forgotten about that show but seeing the pictures of it refreshed my memory enough to know I had seen it on tv before xD

Andromeda with Kevin Sorbo is another early 2000's Sci-Fi show with Gene Roddenberry signature people have forgotten about.

And writing of old cartoons, well I know another site that has almost ALL of the old cartoons. I watched some of Gargoyles and was surprised how well it has held up after all these years.
(make sure you got adblock plus before clicking the link xD)
https://kimcartoon.li/Cartoon/Gargoyles

I checked the search bar on the site and all those cartoons are on the site! So you could check out many on there (some are poorer quality like how Mighty Max was when I watched some of its episodes) but you dont have to buy bootleg and can still watch em!

I really wish companies would put more effort in to conserving older programs and shows, or at least relinquish the rights so a company could step in and make genuine restored copies to sell on DVD and Bluray. Perhaps I just thought up a business model. A company that goes to show companies and acquires enough rights to restore and sell older programs! It'd be a GOLDMINE

reply

Oh wow Mighty Max. Another kids cartoon with some hidden depths and clever storytelling. I actually own Gargoyles on DVD, and it's also on Disney+, but for the vast majority of animated content from the past sites like the one you mentioned are the only option. I'm definitely going to check that site out. Much appreciated. Sounds like they've really put in some effort to collect as much of that stuff as possible.

Most of those old cartoons I don't need physical media for, but there were a few that for whatever reason stayed with me over the years (the 70's Adventures of Flash Gordon was one that really stands out, which I have on DVD), but that site is a terrific resource. There's another one I watched as a teen in the 80's on Nickelodeon called Belle and Sebastian, and unfortunately that site only has a recent remake of the series I didn't know existed. Wish they had the old series from the 80s. Despite the plethora of stuff there, that one's missing. :( Only a few episodes are on VHS, and there's a Spanish DVD with some episodes.

Yeah there are so many rights hurdles that prevent some great old shows from getting the DVD/Blu-ray treatment. Sometimes it's about the songs used, with them being embedded on a single track so can't be replaced, making the endeavor just far too expensive to be worth it, although for some of it may just be that they've faded and been forgotten, and/or there's a lack of interest. Definitely an area of need there.

I'll be awaiting GOLDMINE in the future :)

I agree. It started out ok but after we learned about his past it got boring for me.

i agree. that’s what i thought it would be when i saw the trailer

reply

I agree, I thought this might be a case of a regular guy being caught up in a situation where he's in over his head. Interest lessened when it became John Wick with Bob Odenkirk, and an even more over the top version than that. The parts with his dad is where it went from John Wick to Wanted levels of silly.
