Suppose to put Game of Thrones to shame apparently

https://www.gq.com/story/inside-amazons-wheel-of-time

As legend has it, a few years back, Jeff Bezos demanded that his team at Amazon Studios create a fantasy epic that would put Game of Thrones to shame. Turns out, that kind of thing is even harder to do than it sounds. And more expensive than you can imagine. Inside the epic quest to bring Wheel of Time to life—and maybe change the face of global television forever.

With an ending like Game of Thrones that disappointed many, not hard to do. The makeup, prosthetics, and other practical FX were so good they skipped adding CGI which has peaked my interest to this series alone.

Thanks for the link - really looking forward to this show.

I doubt this will put GoT to shame. Just compare the cast of this TV series to good fantasy eg. GoT or LoTR - those shows/films were full of very good looking people. The cast of this show looks very average - half of them couldn't even work as expensive prostitutes.

I slogged my way through a few hundred pages of the first book in the WoT series and I thought it was garbage, and poorly written garbage. Robert Jordan was a hack writer in my opinion. Typical of a moron like Bezos to blindly get the ball rolling for these awful books to be adapted for television.

these awful books

I don't think you know enough to form this opinion even though I sort of agree with you

Now that I have slogged my way through all fourteen of the audiobooks I know what I'm talking about. And you are right I shouldn't have written off the entire Wheel of Time as garbage. The truth is that there is a fantastic story half buried in amongst all of the filler. But the sheer quantity and horror of the filler is a crime against humanity and Robert Jordan and his Publishers should have been tried at Nuremberg for it !

And I stand by my comment that Robert Jordan was not a good writer, although to call him a complete hack was going too far. He certainly was creative and had some great original ideas but his writing style was wince inducing at times and that's not including the God awful filler.

Way too much filler.

I disagree. Only got through the first three books. Not my genre but I thought the medievalism, lore, and magic were good and I thought the action well written and characters interesting enough. I just don’t like any fiction that is drawn out. If it’s a 500 page book there better be 500 pages of story and not a bunch of filler. I don’t even know if that’s the case but I took a break from it.

Couldna agree more. Gritted teeth thru first 4 ot 5 books, me. Realized nothing memorable had happened in the last 1 or 2. Congluded Jordan was out to win some sort o award for the longest, pointlessly drawn out epic fantasy, no surprise he dieded before finishing. What is the book count up to now, 10? 12? Is it evan finished yet? Whill it evar be? WoT jus keeps on rollin…. The Greatest Story OVERtold…

Half to admit, tho, the serie is more intersting than the books werr. Probalby because much of the filler hade to be trimmed. Actaully looking forward to S2.

There was a LOT of filler. It was a huge issue for fans. A lot of people gave up on the series after a decade, me included.

I don't understand why they never produced abridged editions of the novels, especially with the new TV show to spark interest again they should have had it done and published and ready to go. They would make a fortune all over again as I'm sure a lot of people who own the unabridged books would jump at the chance to buy a well done abridged version. Not to mention all the people who have been put off by the size of the series and all of the filler. It just doesn't make any commercial sense.

reply

Hmm, I've never thought about it but that's an interesting idea.

reply

Well they did do some abridged audiobooks....

reply

What do you know about them....?

reply

I have the first 2. Haven't listened to them in years. They are on cassette. They were very well done and cut out all the fluff....

reply

Audio cassettes ? Then it would be from quite some time ago. Who produced them and who was the narrator ?

I have them packed away somewhere. It would take a lot to find them...lol ..

Sure it would...lol ..

I don't know why that posted 4 times... 😂

Yup, same here. Couldn't even make it through the first, and I have a near-pathological resistance to dropping books halfway through.
