Reasons For It's Huge Financial Success

Feel Free to add, but off the top.of my head.

I think.it has surprised everybody now as it approaches being a Billion Dollar Movie.
...

1.- it's a Joker Movie.
This meant it was probably always going to do pretty well, but still, never thought it would be This Financially successful.

2.- Joaquin Phoenix.
He is a very popular guy, but has kind of hidden himself away doing roles he wants rather than going for populist things. But look at how people have reacted to him, sommany reviews saying how he has always been one of their favourite actors, etc.
And of course he did do a great performance in this.

3.- The Hype and Controversy.

4.- Word Of Mouth

5.- The Smile Trailer.... That really was stunning, one of the best I can remember seeing, and seemed to be when the hype started.

5.- People going to see it twice , at least.

It being a good movie? Like it's rare nowadays to actually get a good movie let alone a comicbook movie, y'know.

reply

Good movies are quite rare nowadays.

reply

Quality. Very well-written, great acting, original, intense, well-directed. The best movie I've seen this year and I've been very anti-superhero films. This movie should be nominated for a couple of Oscars.

reply

As said, well done, all around.... particularly Phoenix portrayal...

Makers never saw such success... a little political in there (ticket-wise) but the whole thing was great.

reply

there wasn't anything original in this movie (unless you haven't watched 'taxi driver', 'king of comedy', 'american psycho', 'falling down', 'god bless america' etc. etc.).
writing and direction were servicable at best, the only thing that really shined was phoenix' performance.

reply

This movie was an especially dark, tragic and brutal take on the Joker's character which I've never previously seen. I felt sorry for this "villain". It was completely from the viewpoint of the Joker which meant that part of the movie was not "real" since he was delusional.

I was surprised by how much I despised the arrogant Thomas Wayne who is usually shown as a victim or at least an upstanding man.

The depressingly hellish but realistic Gotham city landscape was perfect to me - very 1980s NYC.

Batman added to this world in a future film would be interesting. Which actor would be worthy to act opposite Phoenix?

I saw Taxi Driver (barely remember it) and Falling Down (enjoyed).

Phoenix should at least be nominated along with the director and cinematographer.

reply

Yes, but at this point, nothing currently released or will be released shall be considered original without some commonalities or references to other/previous films and tv-shows, so your point is moot with the exception about the lead's performance.

reply

Its not PC, the left hate it, gets better with a second viewing...

reply

Even better with a 3rd.... the left like it too...
The odd rare picture that everyone likes.

reply

I got the impression it was dislkied by the left with so many scare stories over incels wanting to shoot up cinemas and the choice of music.

I'll have to watch it a third time then!

reply

The leftist media hate it, sure... (because they get paid to write such articles.) But 300 millions dollars can't be all came from only conservatives. I think by now it's quite clear that this movie is liked by most American moviegoers (and the rest of the world) regardless of personal political stances.

reply

Why would conservatives like it? It puts Thomas Wayne is a very bad light and it shows how conservatives hurt mentally ill patients by cutting funding.

reply

Because everybody, conservatives and liberals, like this movie. Because it's a well made, well directed and well acted movie.

reply

OK, but why would conservatives like the movie when it puts a bad light on them? Usually conservatives freak out whenever you criticize them.

reply

Everyone who likes to freak out freaks out, conservative or otherwise.

reply

Sure, I guess that is true, but I see very little freaking out when it comes to this movie.

reply

The greatest villain in the history of Hollyweird gets his own flick and it's a monster hit. I'm shocked that the estimates weren't much higher.

reply

hard R rating doesn't lend itself to monster hit

reply

With only two or three scenes of very brief violence and no sex / nudity so it's more like a soft R rather than a hard R. It's no Kingsman or Deadpool.

reply

but it's dark and disturbing while those others are not. and graphic realistic violence is different than stylized violence. no one is coming out of Joker saying it's not that bad, so you can take your kids -- as though it's just a foul mouth, edgier version of a typical CBM -- like those others. Joker is in its own category. It's serious. So you're right, it's no Deadpool. It rang up 1bil without the benefit of casting as wide a net. So, in answer to the OP, no, the estimates should not have been higher. It's been unexpected by every measure based on the nature of the film --i.e., the reasons for its R rating.

Word of mouth driving people to see it. Happened with "Avatar." The latter ended up becoming more and more forgotten.

We will see what happens with "Joker."
