Is this a plot hole?

His scribbles were that of someone with an IQ of a 6 year old. He couldn't string together a coherent sentence. His notes on jokes were really bad.

Yet when he spoke on the murray show he was very articulate and insightful. He went head to head with a man who's job it is to debate people and was the victor.

I kind of feel like in a lot of movies they want to have their cake and eat it too. But it creates a glaring plot hole.

Absolutely. This is a clear sign that it was in his head. He didnt really kill him. He killed his idol in his head to become the joker.

If you watch closely that scene slowly closes in on him in his apartment writing with his right hand and a cigarette is burning in the ash tray. He then stops writing and grabs his cigarette with his right hand and smokes while thinking to himself for a moment. Arthur then puts the cigarette down with his right hand and picks up the pen with is left this time and starts getting a thrilled look on his face, he even waves the pen around slightly with his left hand and makes faces like he's really feeling whatever he's about to attempt to put to paper. As he struggles to write with his left hand he starts making himself laugh while his handwriting gets crazier and he puts down the line "the worst part about having a mental illness is people expect you to behave as if you don't." At the top of the page his writing was coherent and legible but once he switched to writing with his left hand it's less sensible and doesn't stay between the lines, yet he personally enjoys the later less legible part and laughs to himself after drawing the smiley face in the O in Don't.

Yep and I took that as a likely a play on the phrase "Their right hand didn't know what their left hand was doing," basically as a metaphor to show the two different minds of Arthur and Joker.

By my count there seemed to be 3 personalities, 2 major, 1 minor.

reply

I don't really see that as a plot hole.

Mental illness manifests itself in many ways, and it's not uncommon for people to be hyper-intelligent in some ways, but to lacking in mental capacity in other ways.

reply

Mental illness has yet to be fully understood, let alone a plot hole in a film.

Murray’s job wasn’t to debate. He was just a comedian with a talk show. He was an expy of Johnny Carson. Also, I wouldn’t say he won the debate. He mostly just sat there trolling and then killed the guy.

As for his writing, there are people who have a hard time spelling and have sloppy hand writing but can speak well.

Murray is a late night talk show host. He's not a debater. He invited Fleck for a laugh and to maybe give him his 15 minutes of fame. He didn't expect Fleck to go on a rant and confess murders, then he reacted like a normal person, not a debater.
