This movie simply can't turn out good... | EDIT I was dead wrong

EDIT: I was very wrong and I'm glad :)

Big budget comic book movies simply have no edge needed to make a proper movie where the main character is a deranged and highly intelligent psychopath who dresses up as a clown. To escape the need to explore his character and actions on a deeper level, to appease the young edgy fans who secretly or openly identify with the Joker and to make the movie the least controversial as possible (possibly even child-friendly), they'll either make the Joker a sympathetic character who is out for revenge and traumatized, or they'll take the route of making him a secondary character to the hero who is after him.

Tbh, there's about 1% of hope in me that someone with an ounce of talent and creativity gets in charge of this project and menages to pull it off somehow, but then again, who am I kidding - we should all know by now that movies as big as this are written by a committee of writers who follow the same old cash making formula.

Nail on the head. This movie seems to be turning Joker into an anti-hero. Since Thomas Wayne is being written as an expy of Donald Trump, it's obvious there is a bad guy for Joker to fight against. Once you make Joker heroic or sympathetic, you lose the essence of the character.

They also have zazooo

even if the movie is terrible, it will be an interesting experiment. Phoenix is a very ambitious actor and he will no doubt deliver a bonkers, over-the-top performance

the success of the MCU has pushed the entire superhero franchise in the direction of big budget CGI-fest adventure movies. and that's all well and good, but it's nice having a variety of tones and subgenres and the Disney is only providing that with their Netflix shows, and they've been treating those shows as an afterthought lately

so yeah, I'd rather get some weird failures from other studios than just the same cookie cutter shared universe crap over and over and over again for the next 20 years

reply

Sounds right. Phoenix is good casting but Mr J as the star bodes ill. Could work if they make a few detectives hunting him the stars. Keep him crazy and evil.

reply

For the most part, I agree. But being that I like most of Phoenix's work, I'll probably end up watching it on home release. You do make a lot of valid points.

reply

Phoenix is a good actor but... this project does sound like a terrible idea. They'll want to earn Marvel-level money so they'll be at pains to make it palatable to mainstream audiences, so they'll make the Joker all soft and gooey in an attempt to make him sympathetic, and he will no longer be the Joker.

Of course what they really need to make is something like "America Psycho", which has a psychotic killer as the protagonist, and which is chock full of dark humor and social satire. But those are the last elements they'll want to include in a movie that they hope will be seen by billions of people all over the world, because humor and social satire don't necessarily translate into Chinese, and the DC people are dead set against humor anyway.

reply

Oh, I dunno that humor and satire don’t sell in China, Otter. Both Bruce Lee and, to a greater extent, Jackie Chan had humor in many of their films. Then there’s the Category C Chinese movies, which is what they dub their soft-core erotic films. Watch the movie Sex And Zen, starring Shu Qi. I dare you to tell me it’s not truly bizarre, satiric and hilarious, not to mention unbelievable.

reply

Okay, let me ammend that to " American humor doesnt sell in China".

Well, maybe it does, but does it sell billions of tickets?

reply

American films don't sell well in general in China, period. The same goes when China sends their movies to our theaters. The only Chinese movie I actually went to see was Wandering Earth since it was their first big budget sci-fi movie.

They usually make 5-30m at most here while American films fare much better in Chinese cinemas but only by about 10-30m more unless it's Marvel we're talking about then that's a different story.

I was wrong too, but can't find my post, I remember the first pictures looking kinda meh and oh how wrong we were I'm glad to say!

reply

Agreed. The first teaser, the one in the tunnel, it felt 'meh'. God, I was wrong.

I applaud you as one of the only people online to own their words like this. It's too rare. (Pretty rare offline, too, actually...) You're a mature person, KD637
