‘Wonder Woman 3’ Won’t Happen Without Fan Demand And Outcry, Lynda Carter Says

I love Lynda Carter, but whilst I didn't hate WW84 it was pretty much hated by most. I wanted Gal to get a third movie, but I can understand why on the back of that failure and (apparently) Jenkins' less than great ideas for a third one WB canned it for the time being.

Its kind of astounding to me how bad the WW came off the rails, she was clearly deemed the highlight of the lambasted BvS then had her iconic genre busting movie that grossed a near billion, then she was promoted to near lead for the misfire of JL, then the disastrous WW84 (covid/streaming, terrible reviews, probably wouldve made half of WW1 had there been no pandemic) then a few cameos in the Shazam Flash bombs as DCEU was shutting down .

Had WW84 been as big and acclaimed as the first I guess WBros would've seen out the DCEU with WW3 instead of AM2

reply

The reviews for WW84 weren't terrible. On IMDb they were pretty bad sure but on RottenTomatoes, CinemaScore and PostTrak it's firmly middle of the pack for the DCEU and on Metacritic it's even in the upper third.

It's reception was a step down from the first WW movie but it only got dragged on IMDb, a site which is 80+% male and has a real right wing leaning given how often movies for women, minorities and non-heterosexuals get hate brigaded, see Captain Marvel, Ghostbusters, The Little Mermaid and co'.

Expecting those movie bro nerds to give a solo woman superhero movie a fair shake is silly. The first WW movie had a lot of hate prior to release, much of it misogynistic and anti-semitic (Why is a Jew playing WW? WW should have big boobs!). The fact it broke out at the box office and got a big thumbs up from critics largely turned the tide in it's favor with the trollish bores retreating back to their caves.

The box office results of WW84 have a big fat asterisk beside them. Day-and-date release on HBO Max, released on Christmas day pretty much during the peak of the lockdowns. It still managed to outgross The Suicide Squad (2021), Shazam! Fury of the Gods (2023) and Blue Beetle (2023).

reply

You can't really use the DCU as the standard for quality to pur this up against, considering it was mostly disliked. WW84 has a 58% on RT, and that's pretty bad.

reply

It makes all the sense in the world to compare WW84 to the other entries within the DCEU.

What do you want me to compare it to? 12 Angry Men, Jaws, Oppenheimer, Scary Movie, Nosferatu?

It's IMDb rating is abysmal but there are several critic and cinema attendee metrics that show the movie was generally received on par with most of it's franchise. It was better received by critics and movie goers than several of the highest rated on IMDb DCEU entries such as Batman v Superman, Man of Steel and The Flash.

The hate for it is largely echo chambered because IMDb and MovieChat (plus other movie discussion sites) are inundated with movie nerds who are almost exclusively heterosexual men, often white and from western nations such as the US, UK and Canada, many of whom lean to the right politically. You need only see the people on this site crying about 'woke' media, bitching about women in movies and so on.

Captain Marvel got brutally brigaded on IMDb and RottenTomatoes and the hate directed at Gal Gadot prior to Wonder Woman was disgusting. It's clear that many online have biases against women superhero movies.

reply

Yes, compare it to all movies, like any logical person would. Please keep your virtue signaling to yourself.

reply

The alleged hate for WW84 is overblown. Most of it is because people are taking the movie bros on IMDb as gospel and representative of the general audience. A reminder that IMDb is 80% male with many of the userbase prone to misogynistic and racist biases (many movies get brigaded).

Come on, WW84 is as a final product not a good movie! I don't know how they could make Cheetah better work, but definitely could be better handled as this movie, one time she is buddy of her and then a second later she is a mortal enemy. Come on! And Max Lord as the living Dreamstone is a nice idea, but Superman 3/4 level of over the top. Only saved by Pedro Pascal, but the plot around his son is super weak.

And regarding misogynists: Here they have a point! Somehow and without a reason, Trevor takes over the body of a living man and Diana is actually cool with it most of the time. Like never questioning it, as long Trevor is alive. She only renounce her wish of the possesment after she finds out, that is the only thing to rescue the world. So her happiness is more important as an innocent man's live, but at least for the world she can give up. Your selfless superhero, everyone!

'I don't know how they could make Cheetah better work, but definitely could be better handled as this movie, one time she is buddy of her and then a second later she is a mortal enemy.'

I liked Wiig as Cheeteah, but she felt completely shoehorned in. She had absolutely no bearing on the main plot of Lord's master plan. Her presence didn't effect how things played out at all. It's as if Jenkins or some execs realised that Lord on his own didn't provide enough action so they grafted Cheetah on to redress that.

reply

For me it felt more other way around. They planned with Wiig from the start, as she shares so much time with Diana and the plot as best friend becoming your worst enemy always work. But then they realized that she is not working as only enemy and the dreamstone is also to weak as MacGuffin. So they introduced Lord, that Lord becomes the dreamstone and somehow can now fulfill more as one wish.
The action scene in Egypt felt always so arbitrary, it could be also just initially a typical Middle East conflict - no Lord involved at all. And the end fight always looked like from a draft from script writing 101.

reply

I guess at least we can agree that Cheetah's story and Lord's story didn't feel like they belonged with each other!

reply

'Most of it is because people are taking the movie bros on IMDb as gospel and representative of the general audience.'

It's not just on IMDb. There's a lot of hate for that movie elsewhere. And I say that as someone who didn't hate it. I don't think it deserved the level of vitriol it got from many, but there are plenty out there who don't have a good word to say about it.

reply

When he blamed its low score on misogyny and racism, I stopped taking him seriously.

reply

You need only see the recent history of movies and shows getting brigaded on IMDb. It only seems to happen when movies star women, non-whites or non-heterosexuals... I wonder what could be cause of it? Could it be sexism, racism and homophobia?

See Captain Marvel, Ghostbusters, The Little Mermaid and co for more info. Those movies got brigaded so hard that IMDb had to alter their ratings.

Go look at the IMDb ratings for shows like Cleopatra and Velma.

But sure IMDb doesn't have a userbase primarily made up of conservative men, it's the bastion of good faith media reviewing, completely free of bias.

reply

Yes, heterophobic, white hating, misandrist movies do tend to get low scores. Sorry, Comrade.

reply

The First Wonderwoman was a good movie, and generally very well recieved by everyone. Lots of female lead movies do if they're actually good. Stop with the woke posturing. Facts don't align with your words.

reply

So... it won't happen then?

Think Carter had misjudged fan appetite for WW3, its not going to go JL with mass campaigns #releaseWW3 #restoreGadotWW
