Watchable but will soon be forgotten

The story was simple, it was short. I've already forgotten the first one. I doubt I'll remember this one in a year.

What struck me was the wasted opportunity for some good comedic back and forth between Brock and his alter-ego. The banter between them had no wit at all.

Venom comes across as an immature man-child. I think a better take would have been to make him this subtly sarcastic personality who is forced to suffer the indignities of living among the moronic human race. A better template might have Kelsey Grammar's smug and deep-voiced Frasier character.

Another example was that rave scene. It's just sort of dropped in there to waste some time. Venom sez some stuff on stage, but none of it was either profound, or funny. It just sat there.

From the credits, I saw that Hardy was responsible for some of the script. He's an intense guy, not particular known for comedy. He should have had a script doctor overhaul the dialogue.

"...He should have had a script doctor overhaul the dialogue."

Yeah but see, he's a comedian. He knows what he's doing.

Agree. Mildly entertaining movie, and I don't regret paying the price of admission, but it is very forgettable. In a year or two, I probably won't be able to recall the plot of the movie.

reply

Well, as much as they tried, I barely remember any of the Marvel movies. Some were more memorable, but barely anything stuck.

reply

I'd love to compare. For me it had to be the first two (Iron Man + Hulk) probably because of the fact that they were trailblazing. The repetitious formula from there on out makes it a blur for the rest.

Similarly to BeenSavage, I remember the first couple of movies. I remember Winter Soldier too, mostly because it was more of a good spy drama than a superhero movie.

The worst are Infinity War and Endgame. They are complete blur in my mind, despite the fact they were the culmination of a decade of story building.

Same! I wish they took more risks like these with other movies.

reply

I think it was the slapstick humor that ruined the franchise. The first few movies had a joke now and then, but fairly serious.

Thank you for saying this! It's the one thing that drives me insane with this rendition of Venom.
