Thoughts?
As long as it's better than Michael Bay's stinkbomb Pearl Harbor I'll be happy.
shareI actually am surprised by how much I liked the trailer. Emmerich has been kind of iffy has a filmmaker for a while now, so I've been excited for Midway, but cautiously excited.
I think it looks good, though. It probably won't satisfy those who want a serious military film, but as a fun popcorn movie I think it's going to deliver.
Yes, I will see this movie
shareAwesome :) It seems more like Inglorious Bastards like action movie more than a serious Dunkirk like type.
shareYeah, it seems like the kind of movie Roland Emmerich would make. You have to remember that he's the guy who gave us Independence Day and The Day After Tomorrow. He directs fun blockbusters.
As soon as I saw that Emmerich was making this movie I had a sense of what we were going to get. And yeah, it's not going to be Dunkirk.
Yeah I like movies like Inglorious Bastards and Fury where 'real men' do what they're supposed to do-combat/kill the enemy not run away or go into shell shock like Dunkirk with the exeption of Tom Hardy of course!
shareLooks like a trailer for a video game.
shareThis. The cgi is really bad. Pearl Harbor (2001) is an overwrought excessive mess in sentimentality and histrionics ("I think WW2 just started!"). But...Michael Bay really did direct the hell out of the action scenes and it still holds up in that regard.
shareI don't get why people are saying the CGI looks bad. The worst I can say about it is that it looks enough like CGI that we can tell it's CGI. But as CGI, I think it looks pretty damn good.
shareI’ve been wondering why someone haven’t made a film using restored actual aircraft and ships. Now I know this could not be done on the scale of Midway but a less ambitious WWII film could be made this way.
When researching B-17’s I found out there are 15 restored and operational today, and that’s just one type of aircraft. There are many restored ships also that cannot go out to sea but restored none the less.
I know it would be costly but I can’t believe someone has not tried this on a small scale yet.
Having watched Pearl Harbor again recently, it seemed that they used either restored aircraft from the era or replicas. Couldn't say which, but there are several shots that are obviously physical machines, like when the Japanese are rolling into Hawaii.
And I know Battleship had at least a few shots that were on a real WWII battleship.
Roland Emmerich movie? Expect big action, bad writing and little in terms of historical accuracy. In other words he's going to channel Michael Bay.
shareSounds awesome!
Also, I'd push back on your idea that any Emmerich or Bay movie will have bad writing by default. I don't think history bears this out. Their best films are pretty well-written.
