Anyone notice this cool detail?
I’ve seen this film numerous times but I just realized that Robert losing his father and Edward losing his (in the context of the film), were meant to provide a symmetrical yet opposing dynamic in the film’s narrative.
The way the two scenes were shot provided a subtle yet commendable bit of creative structuring, in that, Robert’s father dies in absolute comfort, seated by a fire, laughing and reminiscing with his beloved son, while Edward’s father dies cold, and in agony, laying down, and listening to his son condescend not only his rule but his role as a father.
A masterful bit of writing as well as direction imo.
