This film caught me by surprise in the third act (spoilers)
It'd seemed like a kind of smarmy, tongue-in-cheek, trying to be smart movie...focusing more on style over substance.
And suddenly, when Billy Lee lands with his gang of followers, everything got a whole lot better. The movie seemed to find itself, brought everything together and sh*t started getting real, real fast. The dialogue was excellent...transfixing, even, and the way it built tension reminded me of some of Tarentino's better scenes.
Funny, I watched the first half of this movie a couple weeks ago and didn't get back to it until this afternoon, not realizing I was watching the kind of movie this turned out to be. The old-fashioned setting, the gathering of characters (each with their own motivation), this looked like something we'd seen done many times before. And having just finished it, I'm sure glad I came back to it, because it really seemed to become something else entirely.
Great acting, AMAZING dialogue, an unexpected turn of events and a hero that came out of nowhere...the third act made up for the long runtime, IMO. Very much a movie I'd recommend to people who might have a bit more patience to spare when it comes to movies.
