John (Spoiler)
So why did Terminator kill John? I thought they were friends.
shareThey were. So much so that the Terminator, knowing that he was the very last bit of technology that could lead to the creation of Skynet, bravely sacrificed himself in a vat of molten metal to save his friend. As he slowly melted away, he said good-bye with a final thumbs up.
But...
It turned out he was too stupid to realize there other Terminators out there. And one of THEM killed John. So, his selfless and poignant sacrifice was pointless. Just like this movie.
T2’s Terminator wasn’t exactly brought back. This was a different Terminator (sorta).
sharePossible error - why wasn't the other Terminator a T-1000 model (the Robert Patrick version)?
shareExactly. I pointed this out in a long reply elsewhere.
i. If the T-800 that kills John was sent back as part of a larger team in 1984, did it just hang around for years wandering the earth? Why didn't Kyle Reese know there were more than one?
ii. If it was sent back during the events of T2, then it should have been a T-1000 since the T-800 was superceded by then, as you point out.
iii. The events of T2 supposedly meant the end of Skynet... it never comes into existence. So if it cannot have arrived in the few minutes before it strolls up and kills John... that future no longer exists.
I haven't seen DF for the reason they killed off JC. Was there any attempt in the movie to retcon an explanation for where this new (but out-of-date) T-800 arrived from?
There never was.
sharebecause , er , lemme take a stab at this..
because time travel: maybe when they sent the original 84 , they also sent 10 more to different years (includingh post 92) . but no one (of the goodies)knew .
Then a few years later in the future they invented t1000 , threw that back in time too , to help out seeing as the ten t800s were clearly struggling as the pesky rebels hadnt vanished yet.
Hence the *many* T800s that Sarah gets texts about and has to go destroy during this movie.
I went to youtube to look up various explanations and, yes, yours is the one that came up a few times.
It's flawed though for reasons that I explained in a post another thread. If you're interested you can read the two-part post at:

Miller said that he and Cameron had a major disagreement over the 'rules of time travel' before they started this movie... my guess is that this flaw was the source of that disagreement.
The Terminator that was friends with John (In terminator 2) wasn't the same Terminator that killed him. It was a different one , sent back to kill him.
In Terminator 1 and Terminator: Dark Fate, the T-800 was sent back in time to kill John. In Terminators 2 and 3, the T-800 was friends with John because it was sent back in time to protect John. It's not the same T-800 in each movie; different models.
