🤦🏻That's not his arc.
shareAn arc is someone learning and growing, allowing them to do something they couldn't do at the start of the movie. So he grew to learn that making chocolate is not about how good the chocolate is, but the people you share it with.
Kinda doesn't work as a prequel because he doesn't care about humans in the original. A real prequel would be telling us why he was so indifferent to humans and their suffering.
Bollocks.
His arc is trying to share his dream but quickly finds himself and others being exploited and learns that the system is unfair. But also finds that people are inspired by dreamers and how people look up to him. His ability to read doesn't resolve anything. It helps him confirm what he already knew.
He was sooooooo indifferent to humans he played an elaborate game to prove what he already knew, that Charlie was as kind, compassionate, honest and innocent as he was. And then give him his chocolate factory.
The crazy Wonka who takes the golden ticket holders on a tour of his factory was an act.
You didn't describe an arc. I don't think you understand screenplays bro.
shareI don't care. You've reduced the movie to wonka learning to read. That's about 90seconds of screen time.
shareA character arc shows some sort of growth, allowing the protagonist to do something they couldn't at the start. It's put in because audiences want to see some sort of growth or transformational change in a character. It checks a box.
shareMovies shouldn't be box ticking exercises.
It's not the fact that Wonka can do something he couldn't do. It's that he was taught by Noodle who in turn was taught by Willy sharing his abundant innocence and joy she's been deprived of that sharing a dream is as important as having a dream.
Wonka learns other lessons besides how to read too.
So the chocolate that makes you fly or turn you into a Broadway performer didn't push your suspension of belief?
In regards to Gene Wilder's Wonka being less caring, he's a lot older and has had to deal with lots of completion trying to steal his secrets which forced him to become a recluse. This hasn't happened yet as this is him just starting out so he's a lot more happy, optimistic etc.
