Koresh is to blame.

If he had immediately surrendered, no more lives would've been lost.

reply

Agreed.
He was very likely having sexual relations with little girls in his compound while stockpiling an enormous arsenal of weaponry, some of it illegal.

The Feds were in a terribly tight spot.
Koresh was a lunatic and backed up by a small army of heavily armed idiots. Maybe this mess couldn’t have ended well any way the Gov’t handled it but a very long siege might have saved a lot of lives.

But of course we’re just playing Monday morning quarterback at this point. Something similar happened at Ruby Ridge in Idaho.

reply

Both parties was at fault.

reply

They should have tried to apprehend Koresh off the compound if possible. I’m not sure if he had stopped leaving or something but that would have made more sense to me.

reply

the thing is.... apprehend him for what?
there was no evidence of child abuse. (to those who need this: IM NOT SAYING IT DIDNT HAPPEN) Child Protective Services visited Mt Carmel multiple times the year prior to the raid. they interviewed adults and children. the result - no evidence. other ex-members accounts were mostly hearsay. https://web.archive.org/web/20200723122430/https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/politics/1993/04/25/abuse-allegations-unproven/2dbff5d2-af97-4cbd-b170-9e8b3e4e4db7/

they were stockpiling guns? they were gun dealers. it was their business. it wouldn't be unusual for a stockpile, its legal anyway.

the ATF suspected/knew the BDs were converting guns to full auto and creating grenades. but from my understanding they had no evidence for a simple stop. i guessing that only a raid with a bullshit manufactured warrant would've exposed the weapons.

was the ATF using the excuse there was evidence of a meth lab from infrared imaging for justification for the raid? or grabbing at straws?

ive read many things on waco. but never did a real "deep dive" into it.
im not even sure what the warrant was for. but i saw an abstract at the Hamline Journal of Public Law from a lawyer dave kopel (cato institute libertarian/gun rights advocate mind you)....
The background of the BATF investigation of the Branch Davidian residence indicates that no good reason existed for the Federal BATF to have jurisdiction over the tax offenses it was allegedly investigating. In addition, the warrant application was riddled with errors of law.

ill have to read the warrant, one day.

reply

No kidding.

reply

The ATF fired first.
They should not have fired at all at a place that had unarmed with women and children among them.
Koresh did not trust them.
How can he when he does not think the law is on his side with that show of force?
The FBI set the place on fire.
They are to blame.

reply

The root of the problem is religious fanaticism.
