I was expecting Orville to be more of a parody

I was expecting Orville to be more of a parody, given MacFarlane's track record. Was pretty surprised that he was playing things pretty straight. It was him living out a childhood fantasy I suppose. The scenes of the ship leaving space dock especially, MacFarlane had this "Omg I'm a starship captain" look on his face. But I don't know if you can fit a decent sci-fi plot in 30 minutes. I enjoyed the show, the crew jokes were pretty entertaining. But holy shit, the aliens shoot worse than stormtroopers.

Yes, it seemed a bit too serious, somewhere more closer to Star Trek than Red Dwarf. It was a combination of light humour and straight stuff which didn't feel right to me. Hope they can work on the balance a bit more to make it more appealing.

Good effort, though. I'll be watching it again. It was 45 minutes long.

I agree, I expected "funnier". Then again, I had already seen a lot of the jokes from the first episode in the series trailer and they had to get all of the exposition and introductions out of the way. So maybe new episodes will be better.

General sincerity with a bit of humor here and there is working. I hope they don't cave in and start making it more silly. It's got a good balance right now, after two episodes.

Well, since the episodes are an hour long, that shouldn't be a problem.

Well, at least Stormtroopers (technically, also 'aliens', if you want to use such hostile and alienating terminology just because someone is incarnated to a different planet than you) had a reason for missing their shots.

In any case, it's not only the shooters that are bad, it's their WEAPONS.

It's not your fault, if you can't hit anything, if your weapon shoots weak light pellets that drift slowly in the air so you have to aim and predice where your prey will be in 2 or 5 seconds.

In the future, they don't still have weapons, where you can send huge balls of light that travel very fast (speed of light, anyone?), or at least expanding energy beams, or WIDE beams,. or or or ... sigh.
