This or The Irishman?

I thought The Irishman was better.

I loved The Irishman, and initially I thought Killers was not as good...but now a few days have passed and I want to see it again... I think it may be close to being as good as The Irishman now.

Don't really get why you need to compare. I think they both are great.

I actually put the two together in my head as well, since they are both late-career Scorsese projects, both have DeNiro in a prominent role, and for both films he was given a large budget to make a film as a prestige project for a streaming service.

For my money, The Irishman is the superior film. I found it much more engaging and enjoyable.

Both films are about a simple, uneducated man just back from the war who is loyal to a fault to a father figure who asks him to commit murders, and eventually to kill someone he deeply cares about, and who in the end are denied forgiveness.

reply

Nice, you are totally correct there

reply

"The Irishman" was definitely much better, although for the first hour or so I thought this movie was at that level but it couldn't sustain it.

Apples and oranges.

The Irishman,

because:

but also because The Irishman had more of an "all star cast, maybe never to work together again":

DeNiro
Pacino(his very first Scorsese film)
Pesci(out of retirement, maybe his last film ever)
Keitel (very old, not too many films left in him and he and DeNiro go back to Mean Streets and Taxi Driver).
Ray Romano(hey, he's a billionaire TV legend, and he's good in this).

The Irishman moves right along over ITS 3 and a half hours.

That said, Killers of the Flower Moon is its own acheivement and good to see, as well.

reply

Two very different movies but I would rather watch Killers again. Both are excellent.

reply

The Irishman.

Liked The Irishman a lot but prefer Killers of the Flower Moon, I think it’s an absolute masterclass in storytelling and the time flew by for me whereas I think the Irishman dragged a bit in parts.

I think Killers would be a worthy best picture winner whereas in 2019 I think Parasite, 1917, Jojo Rabbit and Ford v Ferrari were all better films that year than The Irishman.
