5/10 (aimed at kids-family, 90s style)
I had different expectations for this movie... ended up feeling that Samaritan is a relatively mild PG-13, aimed at kids-teenagers who are beginning to look for something more 'grown-up' to watch - I felt a very 90s kinda vibe.
Kinda family action adventure-vibe from the 90s - early 00s.
I would place it along with the following:
Last Action Hero (family-kid-friendly action-adventure / the dynamic between main character and kid)
Meteor Man (overall kid friendly tone-action-adventure about a local city superhero)
Jumanji (overall tone, action-adventure-family involving kids, Samaritan is a little darker in tone though)
Space Jam (Samaritan being a God-like figure who is retired, like Michael Jordan among athletes and the overall tone action-adventure)
Waterworld (the cartoony villains and the tone of the relationship between the kid, the mom and the main character - this one is a more similar tone to Samaritan regarding the relationship between the hero/kid/mom and how far the onscreen violence goes as well as the cartoony-over the top villains)
3 Ninjas
Zoom
Sky High
Hancock
Maybe a little bit of Shazam and Deadpool
I would even say it has some Dick Tracy (1990) because the good guys are GOOD and the bad guys are BAD, no in between the lines and also the dynamic between the boy and the lead.
