LOVE this show! Van Helsing rocks.

People who appreciate watching shows like 30 Days of Night, Alien(s), The Walking Dead and Mad Max, will appreciate the dark, post apocalyptic vampire world of Van Helsing the series.

The stylistically eerie cinematography in the first episode plays on the sense of isolation and the constant ominous.

Jonathan Scarfe is a solid actor in the role of Axel being tough and cool. Kelly Overton who is Vanessa Helsing is noted to have drawn inspiration from Sigourney Weaver's Ripley in Alien(s), completely committing to the role. Two lead actors I'm looking forward to seeing more of in this series.

Vanessa being awoken and suddenly being put into survival mode, very primal and raw. When is the last time you saw a main character go from 0-10 in energy as an introduction to the main character. Vanessa through the series will be challenged to go places within herself that she didn't have a choice in. All reaction. It takes a special kind of actor to play that shift in emotion.

The actor playing Ted (Tim Guinee) is rather good too, enjoyed his performance, and the actor who was the bloody mess (Vincent Gale) near the end was fantastic as well. I know we are going to see some amazing, creepy, main vampire characters introduced in the next few episodes, and this clouded dark world outside, what is out there waiting.

Great tension in story and how it's branching out. Neil Labute heading this series, is kind of like Jim Morrison of The Doors, he knows how to get everybody in, and once you're in, nobody here gets out alive. The entire team of writers will bring the brutal world of the vampire rising, all the different types of vamps and characters.

Giving this a 10/10 for the enjoyment I got out of watching the episode, I'm hooked and want to see more. SyFy will have a standout winner with this, definitely see a fan base taking over.

Van Helsing, paying respect to a classic bloodline in an updated time. A new age of darkness has begun...

What... did we watch the same episode? The only thing I can agree with was the male lead he at least was convincing everything else was just bad or just plain poor.

reply

Agreed...this was Just plain terrible...and there is no campy pass ie. Wynona Earp...

i just finished watching the pilot ep and i was very surprised i like it a lot! the comic-con(?) trailer had good parts of it but also really iffy/bad parts too. so i wasn't sure about the show. the pilot ep was very enjoyable and introduced enough mystery/intrigue that i'm looking forward to the rest of the season!

The cinematography is pretty sh!t on the syfy channel though

You just can't take this seriously just knowing that this is on the syfy channel.

Well, you're right, they have had a past of bad stuff. But also some good ones as well.

The thing with tv these days is that it is all owned by only 6 families. 6 family corps run the entire broadcasting world. The whole ideas of monopolies being illegal seems just words. The regulating of those laws for corps is all BS it seems..
Basically it is owned by NBC Universal and that means Comcast. They own so many, including AT&T broadband and local venues that it is too many to list here,
Anyhow,to me that means they all have about an equal chance, depending on who is running the show and they come and go. So sci fi isn't a stagnant kind of thing,,it could do really good stuff,or bad.

Look at some of what I've thought were good series.... Z Nation,I'm watching that now,,,very good, The Magicians,(I didn't care for it),but good,The Expanse,excellent!!,12 Monkeys, very good.
And in the past along with a pleathera of crap..lol..truly,,they had Eureka and Stargate, one of my favorites, both orig and Atlantis,Univeral sucked,I thought...then Haven was fun,Being Human, really good....,Don't forget Battlestar Gallactica, likely the best sci fi series ever for tv,Warehouse 13,great fun,Defiance was not bad,I liked it,...I liked Sanctuary and Alphas although the latter was cancelled after one season. Way back now,Sliders was fun and popular, and if you never saw the mini series they did .."The Lost Room" check it out. I promise ,it is one of the best sci fi stories ever. Creepy and more creepy...and weird fun as well...
Hey what about Sharknado... Didn't see it,but they even have a sense of humor...lol...

And Incorperated and the Aftermath and Channel Zero look to have at least potential for some really good stuff...so I don't write off something because it is a certain channel. We all tend to stereotype everything,, I do it all the time too.

I said I'd never watch reality shows..I hate them with a passion. Then I tried The Voice, and I like it.
I know they have had duds, but all the networks have.

Anyhow, that is my take on the Sci fi channel...oh and BTW I just deleted Van Helsing from my DVR. It just doesn't cut it for me.

Crapfest of a movie. Crappy actors, crappy acting, crappy writing, what's not to love? Who makes these stupid movies and why? It's like someone got bored one day and pulled it out of their ass.

Well, Syfy plant, how about in every one of your damnedable post Apocalyptic movies or even the main character in 30 Days of Night or how about Walking Dead? You know, the over used trope that's in a lot of garbage.

No one who has ever, EVER touched the Dracula novel would say that. Is she Dutch? Does she have a German accent? Is she a doctor? Is this the Victorian era? Does she fight Dracula? Is she a kind doctor who looks unassuming and frail? Is she in her fifties or sixties and gracefully embracing age while defeating a powerful and youthful monster? I. Don't. Think. so. Shame on you, you liar! How DARE you say this respects Abraham Van Helsing!

It respects a crappy 2003 move that also insulted the original. A crappy movie no one liked. For the love of God, at least watch some Hammer movies before you spitting in my face and calling it rain!

I knew you'd be on the Van Helsing board.. Lol...no, I just happened to see you and thought I'd say hi....I miss you posts for Penny Dreadful and I'm still grieving that loss. I just deleted the DVR of this. Routine awful fare,..it would have had a better chance as a satire named Vanessa Helsing. And as you said, getting some of any of the history correct...Or the Decendant and some kind of omage to the lineage..lol. It is all just over done.

I'm hoping Channel Zero will be fun???

Aww, It's good to be missed. I'm still seeking a replacement for Penny Dreadful. You don't find many good / well-written Gothic horror these days. For all my dislike of what they did with Dracula and Vanessa in season three Penny Dreadful was still a breath of fresh air compared to... things like this...

reply

I agree. I wasn't as happy with season three across the board, but still better than most anything else. When do you ever see anything as poetic as PD on tv,or anywhere.

I just preordered it and Preacher also. I've been watching it,Outcast, Mr Robot and American Horor. I'm still a fan of the Strain as well. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for Channel Zero and a few others.
If you've found something you like let me know.
