Why did King Cobra bomb at the box office?

Looking at the numbers and King Cobra hasn't even made $100,000 dollars at the box office. Yes, the movie is an independent film but still does not explain why it did so poorly? IS it due to the subject matter people just not interested in watching a story about gay men and murder? Or was it because the movie was not marketed well?

reply

It only opened in a few theaters.

reply

the film only opened in 1 theater in NYC he IFC Center in Manhattan.
the film didn't bomb in the traditional sense. also you have to realize
there was virtually no publicity.

It was barely promoted---the only reason I even heard of it was because an LBGT magazine did an interview with the lead actor about it. That's the only thing I saw on it. It's on Netflix.

reply

it's also a VOD release too so im sure some money was made

reply

Its already made money. It was very cheaply made. The producers knew it would not make millions, but it isn't a bomb.

reply

I think it's what they call a "micro-budget film."

As far as the OP's observation about bombing is concerned, it played just about nowhere (I live in a large city, and it was only given a short run at 1 theater (and I made it in time!)

I think they are looking to make most of their revenues from VOD, streaming (later), and maybe DVD/Blu-ray sales. It cost zilch to make, so I'm going to bet that, in the end, they will come out in the black.

reply

i thought you gave a nice explanation as to why the film isn't a "bomb".
a film can only really be considered a "bomb" after the final domestic
box office and VOD sales are in. if the final box office and VOD are more than
the cost or production and advertising than its not a "bomb".

One thing I kept asking myself while watching: Who's the intended audience for this?? I doubt straight people would be interested in going to see this in a theater. Yet for a "gay" film, it was quite well made. It didn't feel low budget like 99% of them.

reply

A gay audience, obviously, lol. They watch films too, you know.

reply

Yes but I doubt there's a large enough gay audience to justify hiring actors like James Franco and Alicia Silverstone. Most 'gay' movies are shot on shoestring budgets using no-name actors.

reply

Well, first off, the film basically sucks (I mean figuratively). I think it was poorly written, the main characters are neither appealing, nor do they inspire much interest, the acting (despite the fact that there are two good veterans in the film) was beneath mediocre to very poor. I was already bored ten minutes into the film.
