Marty was a loon aswell

He seems to have some sort of mental problems, I got the impression he wasn't all there in the head. The scientologists are mad aswell. Everytime Louis asked him about his actions as a member Marty would react like Louis just f##ked his mother and be ridiculously upset.
Marty: go F yourself, go F youself
Louis: Ok I consider myself F---ed 

Have to agree, he seemed completely unhinged and violent!

I sense something off about Marty, as well. There's definitely a veneer. He's amiable on the surface, but, as he says in the film, you have to wonder what he's really capable of.

But, in fairness, it was obvious Marty needed a moment to himself after Scientology brough his kid into it, yet there's Louis with the camera to put him on the spot.

I also believe him when he complained that Louis kept asking the same questions over and over, despite getting answers. That would annoy anyone. When don't see those parts in the film, but it sounds like Louis was subtly trying to push his buttons so he could get past the veneer and get an emotional response. He finally got one.

It's a good thing the scientologists came across so nutty themselves otherwise the unreliable narrative of Marty could have been our main source here. Clearly a little unstable and hugely defensive. I dread to think what horrors that man orchestrated and took part in whilst in that church.

Well considering that he's been stalked for years by an insane cult... just saying, that alone would make anyone pretty edgy

Louis reaction to that bullsht was classic. Marty is the epitome of human garbage. He's got a lot of nerve crying about not being able to make friends. I'm sure his winning personality isn't doing him any favors in that department.

reply

I can easily see how Marty would be behind the scenes at Scientology, beating the crap out of people and coordinating vengeful schemes. He's defensive beyond belief.

A bully, who karma paid back with interest.

His brother has schizophrenia, I think mental illness runs in the family so that might explain why he's so quick to temper.

And he IS the epitome of an "unreliable narrator" because right after this documentary he did a complete 180 and started his own independent Scientology. Now his blog criticizes what he calls "ASC" or Anti-Scientology Cults.

He thinks being AGAINST Scientology is a cult. Seriously, I do think there's something not quite right in his head.

You have to wonder if he did this "unpaid" gig, just to infiltrate and be a counter to the narrative on some level or sabotage to some extent. He's obviously a two-faced person, when you hear the story of him cold cocking the other ex member in the face for not confessing to something he didn't do. I don't doubt that Scientologists stalk and harass members who get out of line, but it was rather coincidental that they showed up at the filming, at the airport past security, etc. He could have been involved to look "crazy" for not wanting to be a lifetime member of the cult or maybe he just didn't like the direction it was going and wanted to start his own as LRH intended?

I watched this a few days ago and just saw the post here about him returning to start his own version. Interesting. I found it enjoyable anyway, to see some actual members in action.

I've watched things on other scientology channels by people who seemed relatively normal. Granted, I don't know these people, but they weren't clearly unhinged like Marty. Some of them seemed to be doing fairly well after Scientology.
