Another forgettable, overrated genre film

3 main problems with this film:

1) Massive plot holes (How do they get so animated from the camera flash if they are passengers?, why are they behaving like android servants if they have people that have been brainswapped into them?)

2) Silly ending. Why not have something different happen in the end of one of these films?

3) Uneccessary comedy element. It's just so tiresome. I'm not saying Rod's character was unfunny, but it just felt like such a forced relief element that the producers thought the viewer needed. I didn't need it.

The film has some nice elements to it. But overall it's such a cliched, overused type of genre film. It could have been so good if it was more straight, chiller than a comedy horror.

Vastly overrated.

A film can never win... If enough people like it... other people will start to say it is overrated... if enough peole dislike a film other people will hail it as a masterpiece... Why can't we just accept that we (human beings) like different things... Why do we need to come out and say this and that is overrated... If we do not like a certain film, tv show, piece of music etc., why don't we just move on... why waste any more time on it?

I actually enjoyed 'Get Out' is it the best movie ever made of course not... but I was entertained:-)

reply

The answer is - because this movie was hyped up as "something different", yet it wasn't.

I feel the shelf life of this type of movie has expired now. And I wish the efforts and money of the people that put this type of movie together would go into something else instead.

reply

I do not know where you live... But I was not hyped at all in Denmark. I just spoke to a friend who said it was entertaining and I should check it out... so I did and found it enjoyable...

And even if it was hyped why do you care just let it go... does it hurt you everyday life that some people enjoy this movie more than you?

This is a movie discussion site. A site that discusses movies. That means we discuss movies when they are great. And also when they are not great.

reply

I understand that you like to discuss films you like... That makes sense to me... or even films you dislike if you need clarification on certain elements in a film...

But is it reallly a discussion you seek, when you start this thread with 'Another forgettable, overrated genre film'? Maybe you should have started you thread with a question mark... that would have invited a discussion.

And it is not that I do not understand this is a movies discussion site... it is just that I do not understand your need to discuss that you think this movie is overhyped...

reply

The only other option is talking to myself. My wife doesn't like movies.

reply

Well... fair enough...

reply

Not true that a film can never win, a lot of them are good, some few are masterpieces and that is a fact. Get Out is fucking garbage, that is also a fact, I'm pretty sure you are old enough to know it, the most pressing question would be, why do you go out of your way to pretend it is not? Why does everyone?

reply

"why do you go out of your way to pretend it is not?"

Because it's fucking not, and most people agree with that. Get over yourself. You don't like it? Fine. Shut the fuck up and move on, your opinion is not superior.

reply

How old are you? Have you seen films made since the beginning? How can you judge the quality of a film unless you have also delved into silent and golden age films?

reply

Hmmm... What the fuck. If you meant to ask me if I've been alive from the beginning of movies history and watched them since the then? Nope. Of course not. You weren't alive neither.

Or hopefully you meant the more logical option (but just expressed it is an odd and confusing way) which goes into the direction of me taking time to watch older movies. Then, yes, I did. Let's say that you start from the 1930s to today and I'd say that I covered this period enough to be able to be a good judge. Are at least have some credibility when it comes to appreciate movies.

reply

Well I think it's fucked up you've seen classic films and still manage to like the excrement produced today. I guess the classic films either went way over your head or you are just pathologically delusional.

reply

Or... I'm not just one of those brainless haters of everything new because "man old stuff is the best stuff and what we do today is total shit". I can still use my perception and see that even though movies were definitely better before than they are now, there are still good movies made.

I don't have to be delusional to see that loving old movies (especially from the 60s and 70s, these are my personal periods in movie history) doesn't stop me from appreciating new movies. And living too much in the past is not really a good thing. I used to live in the past (even though I'm only 25 and weren't even alive back then) and bash on most of the movies made in the last 20 years that I had seen. But with time I just realized that I can still appreciate what's done today and I'm happy because well... I have to live with the fact that I grow up in this generation and at least I will be able to talk about what was coming out during my lifetime.

reply

oF course 60s and 70s is your personal favorite period, just like any other ignorant, stupid fanboy out there. That's when things began to go downhill actually. What you are basically saying is that you force yourself to like it because it's your time, lol pathetic.

reply

.... Are you just an elitist or something?

reply

no, I'm a lover of good films and now they are not being done.

reply

You can not really debate with a person who uses the word 'fact' after his own opinions...

reply

my opinions are based on fact.

reply

really... is that the best you could do? Maybe you should look up the definition/meaning of 'opinion'

I agree with you about the unoriginal ending and the unnecessary comedy, but not about the plot holes. The servant thing was a cover. Would be kinda strange the parents to be black and younger. N-words in the house could be only servants. This actually was clever, because the movie is about racism and it also made the main character uneasy.

About the flashes... well, that was one of those "Dont't ask - we don't know" movie moments. They didn't do brain swapping, but rather brain implanting. They needed the original part, but in a kind of stasis and hence the hypnosis. Seems the flashes were able to bring forward the original personality

Mostly I liked the movie because it was clinically well executed and almost everybody was weird and creepy, even the nice parents.

But yeah. I won't remember it long.

reply

Yeah that's a fair enough post. At the end of the day it just didn't do it for me.

reply

I loved the ending, because I actually expected him to get arrested and blamed for everything. Plus, it was a happy-ish ending which is sometimes nice after torture and horror.

reply

"I actually expected him to get arrested and blamed for everything."

There is an alternate ending on the blu-ray, check it out. ;)

reply

Agreed, it's already been forgotten about. The tag line from the mind of jordan peele is beyond pathetic.

reply

It's one of the most overrated movies of recent years. I get the feeling some viewers were keen to say they loved it, so as to be seen to being clued up on the race debate in modern day america. It's still a silly 'date horror' movie. It wasn't awful, I'm glad I watched it, but it's way, way too highly rated. E.g: At the time of writing, it is rated 7.8 on IMDB, when an amazing movie like 'Primer' is rated just 6.9

reply

Overhyped to levels of stupidity where claims this tripe is a 'documentary' πŸ˜‚πŸ™ˆπŸ˜†πŸ™‰πŸ˜…πŸ™ŠπŸ˜„

reply

Definitely not overrated, but not the sociopolitical masterpiece everyone is touting it to be, either.

I really liked it. Was locked in and engaged from start to end and the performances and story were great.

I will say the ending was a tad disappointing, though.

reply

Overall, it was a really enjoyable movie. It is a little bit overrated though and slightly overlong.

Overrated does not mean bad however. It just means it doesn't quite deserve all released hype surrounding it. There's talk of it being nominated for Oscars! Is it Oscar worthy? Not in a million years, in my opinion. Then again, even the nominates movies nowadays rarely deserve them. I this is all just my silly personal opinion and everyone is entitled to think what they think.

It was just an enjoyable little thriller. I did enjoy it and I will probably watch it again. I had similar opinions about "It Follows".

reply

Agree, very overrated and lousy movie, with a lot of plot holes, especially with the cotton in the ears thing...how the fuck could he put cotton so deep in both of his ears when his hands was tightly strapped to the chair?

reply

The film is overrated, I did like it but it was nothing amazing.

1. To be honest I think the actors were trying to act like older white people pretending to be nice black people to the lead. The servant thing was a cover.

2. Actually the natural end for a film like this would either he would be shot or arrested and blamed for murder, so the ending was little different.

3. I think Rod was a mistake and he is the primary reason the film is a horror comedy and could be nominated as a comedy. He isn’t a funny character in a horror film he is literally a comedic character lifted from any of the comedies Peele has done before.
