Tried being too provocative?

I liked the film but there were parts that took me out cause it felt like they were trying too hard in the dark comedy stakes. They made the main family overly dysfunctional with the trading of the C and F words to one another, and the girl joking about being raped before leaving, and then when the dad turned up for the first time and said his bit. In fact with many characters it felt very, I dunno, scripted and obvious, and left me thinking how nobody really talks this way in real life. Willoughby and his wife chatting being another example.

Talking of Abbie Cornish, I thought that was strange casting. I couldn't figure out what accent she was using, and why she had it. Plus her good looks seemed somewhat out of place.

McDonagh writes a certain way, and the heavy language, dark humour, and witty lines are part of that. If you didn't like it, I guess you didn't like it, but for my money I think he's one of the best writers of all time.

I kinda liked that Cornish's character had an accent. It was one of several idiosyncrasies with the film that, to me, made it feel more real, and less like it was just trotting out the cookie cutters.
