Is it a bad movie? Not really. Is it a war masterpiece? Not at all. The first minutes took me right in and got my blood pumping but unfortunately, it was ephemeral. My first problem; the music (if we can call it that) was atrocious. The sound of a ticking clock for over 50% of the movie drove me nuts and I don’t think there was one single scene that went without an exaggerated soundtrack behind it, as if trying to make it epic. As for the story, here’s the resume: There is a 3 VS 3 plane fight, a few boats getting shot by planes and people jumping in or out from them. Add to this a young boy that gets dramatically pushed down a three steps staircase, also in a boat. The acting was good and the cinematography and FX did look great. The plane scenes were cool but quickly became redundant. Sadly, I did not feel the strong emotions I expected and the finale left me on my appetite. I remember feeling the same exact way as I watched Captain Phillips. I think I might not be a naval movie kind of guy. When I saw grass for the first time, near the end, it was such a relief after all the wet, claustrophobic scenery. Bottom line is, like a said, it’s not a bad movie, plus it made for a great outing with my dad so: 6/10

I agree to a certain extent, but this is an unusual film in its storytelling mode

I think a better way to have done this film is to focus on certain characters. I only remember George, the guy from Bridge of Spies, his son, the crazy soldier they find and some Generals and only George by name. Like - do any of you remember the characters name's?

Other than that I liked the film. Just alone the visuals and the crazy music makes it worth seeing. And the story is kind of amazing.

I have no problem with the time dilation method they used, it was creative, but yes they should have focused on the characters more. The only character that I kind of connected with was Mr. Dawson, the sea segment was the only one that I really, really liked.

I thought the movie was crappy. The editing.... was horrendous. He tried to tell too many stories at the same time. He also did the usual 'man stares into the distance with brooding background music' bits way too many times.

Some of the war scenes were good, but the plot, the editing - it was horrible. Even the Nolan fanboys are not trying to defend this pile of crap.

Yeah, well, this "pile of crap" made close to $300 mil at the box office, so it was a straight up box office hit. Apparently a hell of a lot of other filmgoers disagreed with you. And it's actually a pretty good action-packed war film. It just that too many of you are so used to predictable Hollywood films, you don't know how to deal with anything that's different from the norm.

It's refreshing to see someone give an honest, non-hyperbolic worst-movie-ever/best-movie-ever opinion of a film...

Also, glad you enjoyed your time with your dad. Movies are meant to be shared...

It was underwhelming. Wasn't bad, wasn't great, just underwhelming. I mean 330,000 soldiers were rescued by almost 1000 boats yet on-screen we get to see about a thousand men and about 10 boats. That would be like showing the Battle Of Kursk using around 20 tanks per side. The scale of this film was pathetic.

I felt the scale was realistic, since any one individual would only be seeing a portion of the whole battlefield. Also, there seemed to be lots of space on the beach, which helped make it feel surreal, as the actual experience must have been.

Yes, that also made Dark Knight Rises very uncomfortable to watch. Constant, pounding, monotonous soundtrack threatening to drown everything else out.
