Don't get all the hype

Don't get me wrong, I don't think this was a bad movie but I have to admit I'm shocked to see it at 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. It was well acted and some scenes were moving but overall it felt like it lacked direction. Often it felt like loosely tied together vignettes rather than a feature film that contained some scenes that were at best unnecessary and at worst confusing to the audience.

I agree. I love Laurie Metcalf but I didn't see anything special about this film. Just a quirky coming-of-age tale that I've seen much better done in recent films that didn't get nearly this much attention. Meh.

This was the one year female version of Boyhood.
Loved them both!

There is one thing that's special: the shock comic bits.

That first scene where she suddenly jumps out of the car, Mom screams, then Ms Bird reappears in a pink cast -- all in mere seconds -- had me laughing hard.

I agree. Good movie yes, Oscar contender no. Juno did it better.

I'm watching it and I put it on pause to come here and see if anybody else just wasn't feeling it. I don't get the praise for this movie. I think coming of age stories are very hit and miss, but always end up being critically praised. For example, The Way Way Back was a film that was adored, but I found it to be one of the most cliched, typical coming of age stories.

This is one of those self-congratulating movies that's really about nothing save the musings of a nobody character who's not interesting to start.
I kind of think of it as an attempt at some pseudo-artsy version of "Napoleon Dynamite," except with a lot less fun, direction and no entertaining characters to love.
I like John Campea but I disagree with him totally on this movie and his fit over one critic giving it a negative review on Rotten Tomatoes. I'd rather watch a hobo take a dump in a garbage can than attempt to watch this pointless movie again.

Yes, far too much hype. Not a bad movie. Actually, a pretty good movie. But the cliche of the unhappy teenage girl at odds with a parent was overdone a couple of decades ago. At this point, it's just tiresome.

It's good but not Best Pic material.
Same goes for Get Out.

Haven't seen many of the other nominees, but while I liked these two neither is fit to carry out the garbage for Three Billboards.

Came on the boards for this reason exactly. I love coming of age films, especially about teenage girls. But this one missed the mark for me big time. I much prefer “edge of 17,” “diary of a teenage girl,” “Alex in wonder” and my favorite being “whatever” from 1998. This movie is probably my least favorite coming of age film. I just don’t understand the hype.

I think cause it was the MeToo movement was really in full swing at the time, they needed a film by a woman director that Hollywood could throw it's arms around at award season and Gerwig's film was it.

As you said it's not a bad film, it's a fine indie coming of age film with good performances. I don't think many will be talking about this in years to come. I'm a big fan of Saoirse Ronan but her performance in this wasn't Oscar worthy imo. Laurie Metcalf was the best thing in this film, and deserved her nominations. Gerwig did a fine job. But release this film before the whole Metoo thing and it wouldn't have got anywhere near the glowing reviews or awards that it got.

But every year the awards season has this type of film. The critics go mad for it, and usual the audience are far more split. 2018 awards season Ladybird was that film.
