Don't listen to reviews and critics. THE MOVIE WAS AMAZING!!!

People, please realize that these critics are opinions by individuals that get paid to have *beep* opinions.

holy $$$ :) this movie was really good. For new horror movies to come out and impress me, it doesn't happen often. The last two movies that hit something was The Conjuring 2 and Witch. This one was added to my list and i want to see it again!! The movie has a perfect time length and a progression that doesn't over-do the "creature's" appearance. You are left in a state of tension every time there's darkness. It keeps you on the edge of your seat and definitely delivers a few blows of minor jolts! The movie was amazing and i DEFINITELY recommend it to everyone!!

OTOH, that is a big boat of BS.

This movie was meh and no one paid me to say so. Smh.

Anyone over the age of 4 who finds this film scary is either a doofus, a dork, a dweeb or a goober. I made the mistake of listening to losers like this one who posted glowing reviews, and went to see the film this past weekend at my local multi-plex at 10 bucks a pop. Apparently word had already circulated that the film was a stinker and the nearly empty theater had maybe no more than a dozen suckers like me in the audience. There wasn't a single scream from anyone during the entire film. You read correctly: not one scream. Let's face it, the only thing worse than a comedy that isn't funny is a horror film that's not scary. And Lights Out wasn't scary, unless of course you're the aforementioned doofus, etc.

If you want to save some time and money, see the 2013 3-minute short with the same title by the same director available for free on YouTube.

This movie actually got mostly positive reviews from critics. Certified fresh on RT even.

I learned long ago that the ONLY opinion that matters is MINE if I am paying for it.
Perhaps years of mistakes have sharpened my senses to find movies I will potentially like. What DOESN'T factor into the equation is what critics or others think. I dont even read these things until afterward. Some reviews are just "phones in" reviews by those who didn't even see the movie.
I look at trailers. I read about the subject and plot. THEN I make my decision to see it or not.
The BIGGEST mistake I made this year was "The Witch". All of the supposed glowing reviews meant nothing. One of the WORST things I have wasted my money on. My friend agreed. If he would not have drove, I would have walked out.
I liked Conjuring 2 very much. I saw it twice. I saw Lights Out twice as well.
So to all of the childish name callers, say what you want about me if it makes you feel superior or important. I'll chalk it up to your immaturity.

BTW you cant recommend horror movies to those who hold the beliefs that NO horror movie is any good unless it is rated R.

Reviews are just information. You can't see every movie released, so you use information to decide what to spend your money on. A good trailer certainly helps, but I'm sure you can cite instances of a great trailer misrepresenting a lousy movie, or vice versa.

If you rely on trailers, you're letting marketing folks lead you by the nose . . which is a worse bet than letting critics do the same. A professional critic is at least someone who loves film, has seen a ton of movies of all types, and can write well enough to accurately convey the experience they had in the theater. The marketing folks only have one function . . to drum up as much opening-weekend business as they can.

If I'm on the fence about a movie, reviews help immensely, and I've tended to have pretty good luck as a result. If you haven't, so be it. I loved The Witch, but it's definitely for "film" people, as opposed to straight "movie" people. I enjoyed Lights Out well enough, especially since my daughters were with me, but it's not in the same class as The Witch, which I imagine will be held in high regard for a long time.

I've been doing what I do for a lot of years now. I've made my mistakes in the past. In some cases I feel i have developed a 6th sense when it comes to trailers. I know key things I look for. I also have a few actors/actresses that I will seem nearly all of their work, as long as it is something I would have an interest in. There are certain directors I look for (and some I will completely avoid; likewise for actors)
So far I have liked most movies that James Wan has been involved with.
When I saw trailers for The Witch, frankly I thought this movie might go either way with me. NEVER have I been so deceived and worse yet, all of the positive hype which influenced me made the situation worse. I am still clueless as to what good anyone can find in that movie/film/whatever.
I know instantly I would like Lights Out and it didn't disappoint me. Most of my disappointments come from people dragging me to movies that I know I wont like. A few I have walked out of.
The key is to know yourself and seek out things that you typically like.
As far as "professional" critics, I dont even know if there truly is such a thing.
Actually there was one person who worked in reverse 99% of the time with me.

If he hated a movie, I would see it and love it. If he loved a movie (which was rare) I would avoid it. I later found out that I was wise for doing so.
I'm glad they got rid of him. he "poisoned" a lot of decent movies.

God. The Witch was the WORST movie I have ever seen in a theater. Only reason I stayed is cause I was with a friend and we just waited for it to get good some how. It was HORRIBLE

Critics have been mostly positive toward this film. Currently has a 77% on Rotten Tomatoes.

I love the 2013 short. I too have a sixth sense about movie I would like. I saw this one one the first day, first showing. I'm seriously considering seeing it again and buying the DVD. I haven't felt that way about a horror film since "Sinister"
Of course you can make up your own mind, but this film is far from being "meh"

I loved Sinister, thought it was one of the best horror films of the last ten years but Lights Out was drivel. Half the cinema was creasing up at some of the key action moments including myself. It was an unintentional horror comedy, with Doofus brad/brett/bread stealing the show (cant believe he didnt get killed off)! So many missed opportunities, could have been much better. At least the Witch was creepy and sticks in your head, this is only memorable for how bad and funny it is!

Funny, I actually thought Sinister seemed like an "unintentional" comedy.
Honestly, that was one of the most generic, predictable and useless modern horror films I've seen.
I could literally count down to each jump scare in that film, that is how predictable they were.
