Diana the Inconsistent Ghost

Or demon, or projection, or whatever she was.

She had a physical form, she could mess with light bulbs, cut the electricity, pick people up and slam them down ... but she couldn't take Sophie's (the mom's) pills from the medicine cabinet and flush them down the toilet? She knew, too, that the pills were her enemy. A couple of times she menaced Sophie when Sophie was gonna take her meds. Why didn't Diana get rid of the meds?

Could Diana operate in shadow, or only pitch darkness? Sometimes we see her in a doorway that is shadowed, but when our heroes are only protected by flickering candlelight, that tiny glow keeps her away. Couldn't she come up behind you and spear you with her long fingers? And how did she get around? She manages to travel from Sophie's house to a warehouse, or to Rebecca's apartment -- does she walk from place to place? She seems to be able to move even in light, except invisiblely; for example at the warehouse when the lady was turning the lights on and off, and Diana would get closer. But she couldn't manipulate things in the light, only ... walk? That makes no sense.

And could she be anywhere that is dark? Like, in your shoe? In your car, crouching in the space between the dash and the passenger floorboard? Inside a closed drawer? She could be under your bed or in your closet ... but not in the medicine cabinet? It seemed to be a place where her physical form would fit, but doesn't she reach out from between the slats of a wall at one point?

Was she intelligent? Sometimes she seemed to have the intellect of a child -- scratching stick figures into the floor, or her childish determination to keep Sophie to herself. Other times she seems to have an adult intellect, to the point of setting complex traps (tricking Rebecca and Martin into going to the basement and then locking them in), or stalking the dad/husband to his work.

I wish the movie had spent more time explaining the 'rules' for Diana, and less time showing us how Rebecca didn't want to be involved with a boyfriend or family.

During the initial parts of the movie, Diana never removed Sophie's meds from her because she never felt the need to. Perhaps, Sophie was more than happy to let diana into her life. She even feels guilty for abandoning Diana. Sophie's countenance to Diana changes in the film only after Diana tries to hurt Martin. (Try to remember the scene after they were watching the movie) And when Diana tried to hurt Rebecca towards the end, that was the only time we see, Sophie threatening to take the pills. Diana knocks her unconscious and hides the pills.

Could Diana operate in shadow, or only pitch darkness?

Both! My theory is that Diana is the most powerful in the dark, but she still has limits. She can't teleport from one dark spot to another. She can just move super fast in the dark and possibly possess superhuman strength as well. The scene where we first see her Rebecca's apartment, I feel she moved from Sophie's to there through the dark of night in a matter of a few seconds. After she threatened Rebecca to stay away, she left. Only light in the visible spectrum(vibgyor)seems to hurt Diana. This doesn't mean she can't come out in the light. Might be superpainful if she does. She was okay in the blue light, Rebecca gets her hand on towards the end of the film.

Sometimes we see her in a doorway that is shadowed, but when our heroes are only protected by flickering candlelight, that tiny glow keeps her away.

Only because she didn't want to kill them. Just scare them into leaving Sophie or just accept Diana into their family. Remember the picture little Rebecca draws. Diana only smudges out the father from the picture but accepts both Sophie and Rebecca. She only becomes violent when someone, anyone tries to cut off her connection from this world, the connection being Sophie. Otherwise she is fine.

Couldn't she come up behind you and spear you with her long fingers?

Yes.

She manages to travel from Sophie's house to a warehouse, or to Rebecca's apartment -- does she walk from place to place?

She can move superfast through the dark. In the film she often travels and becomes more active during the night.

She seems to be able to move even in light, except invisiblely; for example at the warehouse when the lady was turning the lights on and off, and Diana would get closer.

In the warehouse scene she only moves closer to the lady when she turns off the light, right? Obviously, Diana can do that. And I think she can touch and manipulate physical objects in the dark or light

And could she be anywhere that is dark? Like, in your shoe?

If you'd read the answer to your first two questions, you'd get your answer. If the shoe was illuminated from all sides, then NO. But say the shoe was kept on the floor and the basement was dark. Then she can come up the basement through the darkness of your shoe. But I don't think she can miniaturize herself, so perhaps she can put a hand in through the shoe.

She could be under your bed or in your closet ... but not in the medicine cabinet?

She can fit her whole body under the bed or inside the closet? How can she do that in the medicine cabinet?

Was she intelligent?

Yeah. Although she died as a child, she must have been present here in spirit form for a long while. Diana killed Rebeccas father, when she was say around 6 or 10. So we can assume she is atleast as old as Rebecca is or as old as Sophie. So we can infer that she was as intelligent as them.

Sometimes she seemed to have the intellect of a child -- scratching stick figures into the floor, or her childish determination to keep Sophie to herself

I think it was a scare tactic. The stick figure would instantly make Rebecca remember that night when she was a child and Diana. And about keeping sophie to herself. Even grown up people can be pretty possessive. But yeah, it's a pretty childish quality even in adults.

Hope these explanations help.

I personally didn't like the movie much, mostly because except for one or two jump scares which was decent, this movie wasn't too scary.

These were the things that were bugging me throughout the whole movie and what have me convinced this worked better as a short.

You're asking for logical explanations regarding a ghost. Do you realize how ridiculous that is? I don't understand how people watch fictional movies about apparitions then judge them on plausibility. The specifics don't have to make sense, she's a GHOST.

I never got the sense Diana was a ghost. She seemed more like a demon, or ghoul of some sort.
But that said, there are always limits to the ability of every being...whether real or *cinematic*.

I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus.
Didn't he discover America?
Penfold, shush.
