Tough for me to watch

Maybe I'm just touchy because of the year(s)-long reality TV show that has been the US presidential show, but "Cleverman" hits a nerve: torture, cruelty, racism, hatred, fear of and segregation of anyone different, (and we are all different). Wall building. Deportation. Separation of families. Discrimination in the workplace. Even with all the hubris about of "Christian values" many of us are still the basest of creatures, driven on instinct, unrestrained by religion and humanity (sometimes driven by religion). It equates to a schizophrenic society and madness.

reply

I haven't watched this yet, though I was intrigued by the plot synopsis, but I wanted to let you know, I really appreciate what you're saying. It does sound tough to watch. I think that's the beauty of good sci-fi, though (if this is considered sci-fi, I'm not sure), isn't it? To hold up a mirror to reality and show us how ugly it is, and make us feel it in a way maybe we don't already, though we should; that is the strength and power of good sci-fi. People should feel this way just from hearing about this stuff, you know? It should make them angry, as I suspect it makes you angry, but if they aren't angry enough, hopefully they can make the connection you made and start to get angry and even do something about it.

Anyway, I think it's good to be "touchy" about these things. It's a rational response. You'd think the world would have progressed by now, but it's still pretty barbaric. I was just on the Human Rights Watch webpage. Oh man.
Hang in there.

reply

It's not 'good sci fi' but clichéd and often poorly made from its initial scenario onwards.

"What is an Oprah?"-Teal'c.

reply

Hmm, well, like I said, I haven't seen it, and there's no accounting for taste, anyway, but I think we could argue about the purpose of art and if something is good or not endlessly (uh, I guess that's what the message boards are for . . .). My point is just that, if something elicits strong feelings, a strong response with real-world implications, one could argue that it's doing its job, and maybe that is worth something in itself, regardless of if you consider it to be well-crafted or even innovative rather than clichéd.

I like seeing new things, things that seem imaginative and innovative, but it's funny to me how sometimes hearing the same old story can evoke a strong response.

reply

From what I've seen so far, it's good entertainment, yes it IS cliched at points, but me not being from Australia and knowing about the divisions of its people in its own country, I am sure this is an "about time" series for them, and for other people "Yeah, the minority rising above, the bothers fighting, yeah I've seen this before". Of course you have! This one, I'm watching for a bit though.

The thing that got me was the well dressed, obviously snotty lady picking one of the Hairies out of a line up from their 'jail' (spoilers ahead):

Man: Just pick one
Woman: It's not that simple darling.
Man: They're all as hairy as each other, one is not as good as the next.
Woman: You've ever been to the pound? You don't take any old (curls her lips in disgust)shih-tzu.

She picks one, the guard shoots the others dead in their heads, execution style.

Same story, different countries, alien or man...there will be no real difference...

consequences-schmonsequences as long as I'm rich.🐇

reply

wow.. you're a deep sensitive person (i meant it in a good way)
probably you should mix it up with some comedy show.

reply

Agreed. First there's a remake of Roots where Africans are treated as subhuman, then along comes Cleverman where more dark skinned people are treated as subhuman. This sucks, I watched the first episode, then no more. These two series, Roots, and Cleverman, just tell the story of European hate, racism, and bigotry. Add on top of all that, DT running for president, and it's just too much.

reply

'These two series, Roots, and Cleverman, just tell the story of European hate,...' just? really? You don't realize how dismissive your comment is. If you don't want to watch it fine. But don't minimize the story and the history behind both shows.

reply

I don't know if any of you guys are Australian, but it's a pretty revolutionary show for Australian TV. Primetime, majority Indigenous cast and creatives, sci-fi/supernatural rather than straight social drama. Never been done before on Aussie TV.

reply

And it's not working-heavy handed, poorly written and ratings poison.

"What is an Oprah?"-Teal'c.

European hate

True,we hate people like you...You're wrong about one part though. We don't care what you are we hate WHO you are.

reply

At first I thought the racism message would have been better if it had been more subtle. Then I remembered how stupid racists are.

No Sitcoms! No Sports! No Reality!

reply

Well, the racism is heavily based upon Nazi Germany, so of course it isn't subtle.

The United States is a country of Laws. We have immigration laws. Just because the current Administration has decided to ignore the law doesn't mean that restoring the law would be hateful or divisive. Those who are in the country illegally should not be. How and when they leave, or stay, will be determined, but it will not be aided by those who ignore the existing law. If you don't like the law, change it, but in the meantime, our President has ignored it and his behavior is reprehensible and demonstrates a hatred for a sovereign America. We are fortunate he will be gone in a little over 200 days.

reply

Oh go suck on a lemon.

reply

It always cracks me up to see people in a land that consists of immigrants (if you don't count the comparatively few natives that are left) complain about immigrants.
Why are most people so stupid? =/

reply

Poor guy is American, what do you expect? Think about it, this is a country where someone like Trump actually has chance to win a presidential ellection, as oposed to being laughed at, a country that made George Bush president, twice, a country at war, a country where more people get shot every day than in most war zones, the country that caused a world wide echonomic crisis, a country that think America the best yet they don't even have proper healthcare for their citizens, a country where workers have next to no right, they don't even have madatory vacation, a country where over 90% of the population are religious, a country where being dumb is considered cool, a country where religious fanatics blow up abortion clinics, where the police is a local militia and often thugs and murderes and all politicians are corrupt, it's pretty much the closest you can come to a muslim country here in the west. Guy's clearly mad that nobody actually want to immigrate to the US anymore, I would be too if I or my family was dumb enough to follow the American "dream" and I was stuck in that *beep*

reply

wow
I couldn't have written that better and that doesn't happen very often. :D

reply

I'd expect it's an hourly experience. Know who you're reading ... his every post complains about America, like Michael Moore on a whinging frenzy. He must have some cartilage to pick.

reply

I happen to agree, nothing good has come from the USA in a long long time.
Most people here hate America and can't believe how stupid the people are really.
It should be renamed Austrichia.

reply

You have to understand that the USA is really 50 states -- many of which are stupid. Basically the southeast that tried to break away during the civil war should have been left a separate country called "Jesusland" where all the racists and anti-union businesses should have gone so the rest of the country could progress like every other civilized nation in the world on issues like health care, vacation time, war, etc.

There actually is another half (more than half, really) of the country that has pro-union labor with health benefits, pensions, vacation time, and social programs and regularly protests the war mongering.

Really, the USA has about 70% of the population of the entire EU with only slightly less land. It's unfair to lump us all together when it's really a few states like Florida that really decide most of our elections and unfortunately tend to favor the stupids like Texas, Alabama, Tennessee, West Virginia, etc. etc. in the southeast. Imagine if all citizens of the EU were lumped together as being like those from its worst member states. It's not really fair.

No worries, though. Trump never had a serious chance of winning. The odds are 80% in Hillary's favor (not that she's that great, but the lesser of 2 evils.) Demographics have shifted to where Democrats will likely control the government for the foreseeable future. We have a long way to go, but we're improving our health care and worker's rights... slowly.

reply

I concur with your comment "...many of which are stupid". Bloomberg News online had a piece entitled "Culturally Constructed Ignorance Wins The Day".

"Stanford University professor Robert N. Proctor, who described it (agnotology) as 'culturally constructed ignorance, created by special interest groups to create confusion and suppress the truth in a societally important issue.' It is especially useful to sow seeds of doubt in complex scientific issues by publicizing inaccurate or misleading data.'",

We are a society where dummying down is good, intellectualism is elitist and suspect.

Have you been to America? Or are just regurgitating leftwing propaganda?

Don't know if you'll ever see this, but wanted to say- great reply..! Except for the 90% religious part the rest was pretty right on..
It's a young country with young souls trying to find their way to the light.. Going to be an interesting show to watch..
Thankfully I have popcorn and M&M's.. ;)

reply

Because they know how it turned out for the original peoples after they invaded their countries. Now they're scared to death.

Karma.

Immigration is not the issue here. Very few people are affected. No one's lost a job because a Mexican crossed a border (a border that used to be his people's land), but because greedy businesses have shipped jobs overseas. If all the Mexicans leave, the costs of goods is going to skyrocket and more jobs sure going to go overseas. This will be a country with no GNP but dependent on imports.

But, hey, America is based on fear and hate, so DT screams Mexicans are racists and he's had some people by the balls ever since. No policies, just building a wall. He could shoot someone but as long as he hates who the people hate, he's gold.

This senile old racist is going to send this country into a recession.

Now he's talking about invading a country and stealing it's oil. That's called plundering. ISIS wants him to be president do they can radicalize even more.

The stupid in this country think it's the "good old days" when Indians were massacred, blacks were enslaved, and America can continue to bully other nations.

I second your emotion. That commenter is simply a narrow-minded bigot (or a bigoted-minded simpleton. Either way, he is what the french would call a "shower.")

reply

I'd think the law sending IRS goons after you if you fail to fulfill required purchases and subscriptions is more appropriate.

That's a law our president seems interesting in enforcing.

reply

@AnotherCineFan

The truth is, Obama has deported more illegal immigrants throughout his term than Bush has---here an article about it:

http://fusion.net/story/252637/obama-has-deported-more-immigrants-than-any-other-president-now-hes-running-up-the-score/

So your claim that he's done nothing about immigration is just pure ignorant nonsense. Next time look up some actual facts before just saying whatever you wan when you don't even know what you're talking about.

our President has ignored it and his behavior is reprehensible and demonstrates a hatred for a sovereign America.

Oh, get real. Why don't you paranoid right wing nuts actually look up Obama's record and see the things he's actually done, as opposed to idiots like you who just believes anything FOX News says. You sound like these stupid birther idiots claiming our President wasn't born here, and all that nonsense.

reply

Anyway, CLEVERMAN's currently streaming on Netflix to watch. I'm interested in it because I've never seen an Australian sci-fi/supernatural series with Aboriginal people as the main characters, as well as using Aboriginal folklore in the plot. That alone intrigued me enough to get interested in this show. Basically, the premise sounds like a dark metaphor for the way Aboriginal people have been treated throughout Australian history, and how they're still being treated today. Cool to see that it got distributed here in the U.S., so it can get some more hype. As a black American, I've always thought that their history of being colonized (in their own country, in this case) was pretty similar to both black Americans and Native Americans' history of being colonized here in the U.S. So it's interesting to hear about a show that works some of this into the plot.

reply

If Obama cured cancer and said free insurance for everyone, they'd reject it.

They had to change the name of the ACA in some states so stupid racists with no teeth or healthcare would accept it.

Racism is stupid.

reply

This series is racist and political. It should not be funded.

reply

It deals with racism toward aboriginal people and the politics around that---dealing with that in itself is not racist. You need to look up the word and find out what it means, because apparently you really don't know.
