Maybe I'm just touchy because of the year(s)-long reality TV show that has been the US presidential show, but "Cleverman" hits a nerve: torture, cruelty, racism, hatred, fear of and segregation of anyone different, (and we are all different). Wall building. Deportation. Separation of families. Discrimination in the workplace. Even with all the hubris about of "Christian values" many of us are still the basest of creatures, driven on instinct, unrestrained by religion and humanity (sometimes driven by religion). It equates to a schizophrenic society and madness.
It effected me because it was too nazi-ish. When the cop said separate the children from their parents, that's all I could think of. And of course murdering a child then forcing her mother away from her, not allowing her to grieve over the body. Hard to watch.
"What would you like to see on your honeymoon, Mrs. Cord?" "Lots of lovely ceilings."
One of the "hairies" already whipped the a**** of some cops in the first episode, after they shot that poor little girl. Another one whipped some a** while trying to escape from prison, so there's plenty of action in the first episode alone. Also, I'm tired of people whining about how they don't like to see politics and real life reflected in TV shows, even though you see that on TV and in movies all the time---when those subjects are made entertaining to watch, that's what matters when it comes to entertainment. So quit whining about it. And given the aborginal people's history in Australia, certain topics like racism and people getting displaced in their own lands are going to be hard to avoid, because that's a large part of said history. That being said, it's nice to see an Australian program about black Australians for a change.
Watched the whole series, and liked it because it was something different, intriguing, and the was the first time I'd ever seen aborginal mythology used as the background for a sci-fi series. Since there was a big cliffhanger at the first season's end, of course I'm waiting for season 2 (it was already renewed, so that's good.)
I don't know that you'll ever get back to this but I wanted to tell you that you've expressed much that I feel as well and done it beautifully. I long ago gave up virtually any kind of viewing that involves hate for hates sake and/or violence for the same reasons.
Game of Thrones, no thanks. Black Sails, uhh-uhh. Mr. Robot (or whatever it's called), I'll pass.
The world has always been a scary, difficult place; but lately it seems like many seem to thrive on power for it's own sake while destroying any and everyone who gets in their way for any reason... Given all of that along with so much more... added to what you were brave enough to post and I'll confess that I've simply stopped watching anything that doesn't take me out of all of the visual reminders of our "real world" and put me into one that doesn't resemble it in the least.
I pretty much made one exception... Strike Back. Because I just loved watching those guys kick the crap out of the same type of "mentality" that appears to be taking over our entire country. They're all "justified", they're all "entitled" and they all want to make the world over in their image because "It's the right one"! So yeah, I got a kick out of Stonebridge & Scott go all: "if it moves and it ain't us... shoot it or blow it up!" What can I say, it made me smile...
Kind of like your post did. Because if YOU'RE out there, if there are also people out there who agree with you... then just maybe the world isn't quite as scary as it was before I read this. So thank you jj... I didn't find Cleverman all that clever either. For exactly the same reasons you so eloquently posted.
"You told me I had nothing. But you were wrong. I have love, I have hope and I have faith."
I find it a little ironic that at 57 years old... I am STILL always amazed to discover I am not alone. .... and it never ceases to make me smile. So thank you nsa, for helping me to remember it's not always just "me". Many times, maybe even most of the time, it's "us". It's just that the "us" isn't as loud or as angry or as demanding or even as obvious as so many "others" seem to be. Which is why knowing that there is indeed an "us" out there, keeps me able to continue moving forward with hope. Which is a pretty big gift indeed.
