No LATINOS, No Support. Bronx population in the 70's

I had a feeling, the people behind this project would not cast a young male Latino. It’s tough having to watch these films that re-write history. I felt because it was released on Netflix, they wouldn’t have to cater to middle America’s perception of disregarding the other ethnicity present. As someone who knows a bit about the 1970’s population in the Bronx, I wrote to the creators that it should have a Latino presence. Legendary actor Jimmy Smits has a role as a dad, which is dope. I know the Australian creator wouldn't know the population of the Bronx in 1970 but the 13 writers which only had 1 Latina, had to see how diverse it was by watching “The Warriors”.
Media reports Latinos are the largest population of minorities, in the country and as the movie going public. I’m just not understanding why Latinos are not on the screen. When it comes to these films based on Urban subject matters, I’m always wondering where is the kind like me? We heard of the term "WhiteWashing" but is black wash a thing? Now, when I hear diversity, I’m only seeing these projects adding a Black role and it’s diverse. I wonder if it’s because Hollywood is like, “Hey, if we don’t we’ll get heat for it” like Seinfeld received for not having Black comics in the 1st season of “Comedians Getting Coffee…”
Black “Annie”, “Karate Kid” and “Human Torch” are empowering and great for the youth to see, ALL YOUTH. I’ve auditioned for roles and coincidentally the ones i get are the panels that have Latino behind the project. Most of the time they’re passion projects that don't get much exposure. Tyler Perry, Ron Howard, please make a role for a Latino like the one I seen in the film “DOPE”. That character didn’t have any of the stereotypes of “Latino” I’m use to seeing and I Loved it. I marched when White people played Latinos in the “Perez Family” 20 yrs ago. I don’t want to see Latin versions of Jim Carrey or Kevin Hart, just good talent who are role models to kids Donald Trump doesn’t want in this country.
I love that Wayans gave Chris Rock a role and that Martin Lawrence helped Tracy Morgan. However, I’m starting to believe John Lequizamo and Ruben Blades, who have long careers don’t have that power cause some of you guys reading this may not even know who they are. Maybe their isn’t that mentality of helping someone among Latin actors because I can’t think of one Jennifer Lopez brought up. All this fuss America made about a Black Stormtrooper and not a peep about (Oscar Isaac) a Latino one. Oscar Isaac believes because he dropped “Hernandez” as his last name that he gets cast in non typical Latino roles. That may not be nuts to you but it kinda sucks to have to drop your families name, but it Hollywood.
Back to this film, if it’s about Black kids coming up, awesome. If it’s about the “Makings of Hip Hop”, based on the culture I lived. Along with the prominent Latinos in the documentary films like “Rubble Kings” and “Fresh Dressed”, then this is wrong. I’m not trying to put peg races against each other. I just want my daughter to pull strength from role models that look like her, who aren’t the love interest, which seems to be the only role for a Latina. I feel like the film industry cant black ball Latinos cause they don’t barely acknowledge us.

What about Ugly Betty or Jane the Virgin?
Two non typical Latino roles.

I think you judged too soon.

Just saw the trailer and it looks like a great mixture of latinos and blacks in this movie.

I'm sure they want to be accurate...especially it being the South Bronx where there is a heavy population of latinoes

I get what you're saying, and just wanted to add to the fact that even the Sheen family (FamÍlia Estavez) changed their surname in order to score more work in Hollywood. I even remember Charlie Sheen (Carlos Irwin Estevez) mentioning it in some interview once.

One day in this country, people will move past going out of their way to be insulted. A day will come when a show like this is celebrated just because it is good not because it meets someone's desire to hijack it and use it for their own POV. My wife is a Latina that has the same look and natural 'afro' hair as Guardiola. As I am sure that you are aware hispanics/latinos have an incredibly diverse look. We watched the first couple of episodes when her mom was visiting and we had her family over. Not once did they feel like a dissertation on why hispanics weren't properly represented in the film was needed.

One day, people will sit back watch talented young people and won't notice these things- I think it is extremely unfair to those talented young people to focus only on their race and not how to a person they did an incredible job. That is what we should be talking about.

Sometimes people are picked to do a role because they are the best choice. This is a story about people. As a white fairly conservative male I see an incredible show like this- so well done in every way and it strikes me a story that describes more about how we are the same and to use a worn out big cliche' it portrays the human condition. We ALL can feel what those kids were feeling. Love, frustration, desire, life, parents, goals, failures, achievements, etc.

I travel all over the world for work training law enforcement and other agencies and the best places to be all seem to have 1 thing in common- People just simply live together as people. We'll get there some day. At some point people will realize that what we share is FAR more important than what makes us different. Love, desire for safety, roof over our head, taking care of our family and friends. Those are the things that REALLY matter- in this country we spend way too much time looking to be or feel insulted. We spend too much time apart from one another instead of being together and making the racists and idiots of all races feel uncomfortable because they are pushed away. Those are the people we should be segregating and not artificially segregating ourselves from people who are much more like us than the fools.

And finally the beauty of this country is that if you feel so strongly about a Bronx movie and that it didn't doesn't properly represent the community- Go make your own show and do it properly. Teach us all what you mean vice just saying they are essentially wrong. All of us, any of us can point at something and find problems and things that are wrong. Teach me something by showing me how it really was/is/should be- challenge us with something better.

Only special people provide real and wide ranging solutions.

You are obviously a smart man and probably smarter than me by a long shot- take some time to enjoy what is around you. Watch a show like this and then tell people how amazing it was that it brought back memories or made you think of something you experienced and brought a smile to your face or a bit of pain to your heart. I am not from there and the first Episode did all of that for me.

The whole secondary plot line is about a young Puerto Rican girl, there seems to be a fair amount of representation in the cast of the latino community.

Yeah. The OP jumped the gun big time.

so true. there are very few mainstream Latino actors or actresses to look up to as role models ... & many are cast as caricatures - Sofia Vergara is one of the first names that pops up when I search "Latino Role Models in Hollywood," don't quite know what to make of that ...

I think it's sort of funny to list a few names or titles to 'disprove' the fact that Latinos are underrepresented in popular media. Sure, it's getting incrementally better... Jane the Virgin does exist, that badass Miguel Gomez saving the world from the Strain, & there's Metástasis... but they're merely blips on the enormous radar.
There's no need for us to qualify this - how many movies can you name off the top of your head that feature a predominantly (or entirely) white cast.. Like 100 maybe? & how many can you name that feature a predominantly Latino cast? (Y Tu Mamá También no cuenta)

That being said, I am a fan of the Get Down - a more episodic/ambitious version of Krush Groove/Wild Style with a very diverse cast (Eric Bogosian! ha) ... although I completely agree with the OP in general, & I long to see more diversity across the board, as far as The Get Down goes: there's really not much to complain about.
