Did anyone else feel like the bullying of El was a bit over the top?

Especially at the skating rink, they took over the intercom, they skated around her in a big elaborate scheme insulting her, then that dude tossed a milkshake on her, she was tripped at school and had her project stomped on. It was just too much imo, it felt so over the top.

They was being ruthless to her for no reason at all, just a big gang of them constantly laughing at her and torturing her.

I don't recall any bullying like that back in the 80's.

Also wanted to add, I don't remember tube socks still being worn in mid eighties, nor that style of gym short that they were wearing at the skating rink.

Roller Rinks as a fad were dead by 1983. The craze pretty much peaked about 1979-80 and died fast.

reply

I don't know about that soon in the area I grew up except it died with me after middle school.

reply

Yeah I thought it became over the top at the skating rink, as if it seemed even people that didn't even know her were in on the bullying, like the guy on the intercom. There's usually always people that stick up for the person being bullied but not even on that occasion.

my thoughgs exactly

reply

I was more like "she hit her with the skate? and? good job, sometimes violence is the answer". that permanent scar to her pretty face may teach her to be a better person next time

reply

Yeah, very much so.

They're not even trying to emulate the bullying portrayed in 70s-80s movies, like Heathers, Carrie and Stephen King's It. And all the girls bullied in these films were bigger targets than El, who's just a little different. She doesn't compare to Carrie, who was quite odd, or Beverly Marsh, who was poor and had a janitor for a dad, or Martha, who was a plus size girl. And in comparison to the first season, where a kid made Mike walk off a cliff and kill himself or at the very least paralyze himself for life, this over the top random meanness seems kinda dumb.

I saw this the other day (I'm a trucker and saw this in Miles City) at an abandoned Kmart parking lot.

#11 was right in her decision to try and murder Angela with her roller skates.

reply

The idiot DJ should have been fired too. It was ridiculous from start to finish and Mike showed that he isn't worthy of being El's boyfriend.

Bullying in real life: verbal abuse, pushing and minor pranks

Bullying on tv: Huge elaborate schemes involving lots of people that require more precise planning than a bank heist.
