Excellent film
This movie alooks stunningly beautiful. With lavish decors, expensive suits, amazing lighting and camera work but, most of all, what might be one of the best make-up artist work that has ever been done. Way better than for The Whale. As for the story, I’m not a big on history and politics nor did I knew much about this Churchill guy but it sure was interesting and I appreciated having an up-close and personal look at how it might have happened to these important men and woman (the typewriter girl was actually an essential part of it all and his wife was the perfect wife a Prime minister could wish for. Always behind him but never dishonest about her opinions.) Snd how about the king! Is it even possible for a king to be so chill? I sure love how he was played. Here’s a comment I really agree with: « Yes, it does tell of the extreme intensity of the early days of the war, the political manoeuvring in Westminster as Churchill was appointed Prime Minister, and the impending threat that the fall of Britain could very well mean the end of freedom-loving Western civilisation, which are all absolutely fascinating to watch unfold, but they're all parts of history that you arguably already know very well.
That's why the film's decision to bring a brilliant sense of humour and a strong passion to proceedings is so effective. The importance of the events being portrayed on screen is never downplayed, and there are indeed some very intense and emotionally powerful moments, but there's so much more to Darkest Hour than just history, something that made it such a refreshing watch compared to how most Oscar-bait biographies turn out. » My rating: 8.5/10
