Why didn't Mr. Church admit he was gay at the end? She wouldn't care

Why carry the secret all alone, to his grave?

Why not just tell her that he's gay, and that he's suffered a hard life because of it?

Charlotte would have accepted him with open arms and it would have lifted a GREAT DEAL off of his shoulders. Charlotte was his family now, why did he just stay quiet?

He's not gay.. When Charlotte drove by and found out about Jelly's, she saw him chatting up two women and inviting them into the club..

A better question is why does someone spoil a movie?

Get your *beep* together and don't spoil movies.

I totally thought Mr. Church was gay. The secrecy and shame around the bar could only be explained in my mind by it being a gay bar. The daughter says something like "we all knew about Jellies". Some people have written about how Mr. church went into the bar with two women, but there were plenty of women hanging out at gay bars in the 80s. I don't think it needed to be revealed at the end that he was gay. He kept his life private and why not keep it that way. I also assumed that he died of an HIV related death. He was not that old, he got sick and then he suddenly died. This kind of sudden death from what seemed like a normal sickness was very common before the antiviral combination drugs came out in 1996. Before then most people died within a couple of years of getting HIV. Just like in the movie, I think in real life many people's friends and neighbors died without them knowing that their death was HIV related.

I don't think he was gay. He may have dabbled or something when he was young, that would explain why his dad kicked him out and called him a "fa*". I do believe he decided not to live that life style if so...he married, said SHE decided she didn't want him...so I don't think he left her. I also think he had a thing for Charlie's mom...he stayed on to care for her. In his, apartment he had a painting of her, also when he was telling g the lady bug story the girl said maybe she is in the sky...get said yes, maybe...making me think he was thinking of Charlie's mom.

I did not really think that he was gay while watching the movie but it actually makes sense if he was. Either way, it was a really good film.

I came here trying to understand the truth about Mr. Church's character. Firstly everything portrayed in the isn't exactly. For example Mr. Church never met Izzy. He never told her the story of the lady bug. I feel the story is written in a way that protects Mr.Church's privacy. I think she would definitely want to honor his privacy so they intentionally only provided bits and pieces that alluded to whatever we the viewers choose. But some things that may suggest he was gay are 1) his need for privacy. Everyone needs privacy but mr. Church had a strange need of it. The type of privacy needed when living a double life was afraid if ppl knew they would judge him like his father did. His father was abusive and made him ashamed of who he was. Even though the movie suggests that Jellys was a jazz club this is just an effort to keep Mr. Church's life private. Otherwise she wouldn't have gone out her way to hide matches bought from a regular jazz lounge. 2) Mr. Church said being with them he felt safe to be himself. Mr. Church loved to cook, sew, garden, paint and read. To many people cooking and sewing are female hobbies... but he felt safe to do those things around them because cooking gardening painting etc was who he was. As good as a cook that he was Jelly said he didn't even know he could cook. 3) during his intoxicated rambling with his fathers ghost he'd take that time to stand up to his dad who obviously criticized him for being who he was and called him the *f* word... 4) he referred to having married just to appease his father who as we know criticized his sexuality. He goes on to explain that although the woman was a wonderful woman he couldn't be the husband she wanted. Imagine that.5) I believe mr. Church illness was hiv/aids. The movie was very open about the mothers illness and gave details. But when Mr. Church got ill there was no mention of what it was. The fact that there were no more doctor visits and he always had a blanket. Why wouldn't they say
