why rating so low

Are 4.9 score is based from original? We know the original one is racist althought we know as one of the greatest silent film. But compare the new one with the old is very childish I think, because this new is not racist, but based on the original one, not like old version. I wonder if this movie have won or nominated by academy, it will be one of the lowest rating on IMDb who nominated for best picture. And we know who will blame for this. I mean "come on, people! It is just based on" sorry if I'm wrong!

Unfortunately, this movie is getting the bad end of the stick from both sides. And, right in the eye.

One, people are rating this movie based on how they feel about Nate Parker and the rape allegations. To me, that's a rating for another website.

Two, people are rating this movie based on how "racist" they think it is...or isn't. Again, a rating for another website.

Frankly, I'm hoping the websites those votes belong on don't exist, but sadly I'm sure they do, somewhere out there. PLEASE do not send me links. :)

Somewhere in this mess of votes, I'm sure there are the true votes of those people who watched the film and took the time to really think about their thoughts on it, but those are getting lost in all this other nonsense.

My grandmother used to say "Nothing good happens after midnight". Now she says "Nothing good happens after midnight, or on the internet". Ain't that the truth, Granny!

Because people are rating it because of his past. This rating means nothing. Im going to see it friday.

You are right

The low rating has a lot to do with the rape controversy I think. The rating will probably go up but never be high. Somewhere around 6-6.5 by my guess.

It could be like a Suicide Squad/ Batman V. Superman situation, where users prematurely rate a movie based on political motivation or simple fandom

Now there's a putrid little racist troll for you...

The low score is based entirely on the subject of the film and the fact that the only time that most whites want to see black slave movies, they(the blacks must be completely subjugated. This movie is showing Nat and the other slaves as unapologetic freedom fighters. This both scares and infuriates many whites whose only form of retaliation is to down vote it on this board.

I think most whites want to see blacks join the human race and act responsibly, accept responsibility, and understand accountability for their actions.

Most whites have been waiting a long time to witness this, despite all sorts of "accelerated programs" to get blacks to catch up.

This movie doesn't address any of that.

It's made by a punk about a punk who killed women and children, which caused slavery to go on for at least another decade if not more.

"Most whites" do more to help blacks than "most blacks " do to help themselves.

Fact you can't deal with: blacks as slaves were better off as white property than blacks as free men are as neighbors to other blacks.

The KKK didn't go shoot 75+ black people in Chicago over this past Thanksgiving weekend. Blacks did it. And blacks don't even seem to care, while they blither on about "BLM".

Thanks for your comedy.

If people were rating the movie based on the quality of it and not based on any controversies & so forth... the imdb average on this would be 6.x

It's a very averagely made movie. I know the subject matter and the person who worked on the movie bring out a lot of varying passionate opinions about them from different groups of people but, if you can manage to put aside & see past that passion what you're left with is a movie that isn't bad but, you know, it's not a "proper good" movie (i.e. Menace II Society) either.

From the reviews and criticism they painted Nat Turner as a slave rebelling against oppression. They left out his murdering of women and children.

The big problem with historical films is if you take a controversial figure and the film glosses over the historical bad points of the main character it doesn't sell well.
