A couple of weeks after my initial reply I have to admit I now have a different opinion...

I enjoyed the first three seasons of Vikings (especially seasons 1 and 2) but this season is awfully boring and I can't remember what happened in the last episode. Whereas at first I couldn't wait to watch the episode as soon as it aired, I'm now a couple of episodes behind and, frankly, I don't care...

Travis' eyes (and smirk, and hands) are not enough anymore.

Looking forward to TLK's second season!

"Now, who has the key?"

Ragnar is a goner anyway in the 3nd part of series 4.

Hmm I like how Vikings focuses on the Dane POV, but I think I like the characters in TLK more...I can't pick! 😨

reply

I enjoy The Last Kingdom a great deal, but Vikings tops it.

Vikings has more violence and is more mythical and ridiculous, (for example: Shield maidens, Lagertha becoming Earl, the English/Mercian slut queen blatantly groping and talking about sex with Danes in full view of her court...etc).

That might make SJW's happy but there is no way on earth either the Vikings or the Saxons would ever have tolerated that in those days. And the shield maidens thing is just so stupid... like do I even need to explain it?

TLK doesn't suffer from any political correctness and is so refreshing and so much better because of that. Theres more politics, more drama (Uhtred the pagan hates English Christianity but Uhtred the Saxon is only accepted by Wessex...etc), and the production values just look a lot better.

To sum up, Vikings only works if you are hypnotized by Ragnar's charisma (for guys) or looks (for ladies). Once you move past that, the show is pretty stupid. TLK has a less charismatic protagonist, but hes far more fleshed out and interesting AND the rest of the show is much more realistic and well done. Take your pick.

And for all the shield maiden beliebers... http://www.cnn.com/2016/08/15/politics/female-marine-infantry-course/

Speaking of political correctness, of course the almighty, fearless fighting, never aging, perfect hair and makeup even during battles Lagertha, is having token PC love affair with a woman in S5. The fact that everybody ages and she does not I find ridiculously funny.

There is tons of over the top religous imagery -visions in Vikings, I kinda prefer the much more grounded TLK.

reply

Haha good point. I stopped watching after the beginning of season 3 as I just couldn't get into it anymore but I am so not surprised.

I was totally taken by The Last Kingdom immidiately after the 1 ep, so I am very happy to hear that it more historically accurate than Vikings. As someone who have never dig deeper to learn something more about the early history of GB, I am happy that I can see sth else than King Arthur. I haven't got the slightest notion, how the tribes, and peoples living in Britain looked like after Romans conquest and how they lived, but I absolutely love the look of huts and shaks and poor vilages as shown in the series. The costumes and make up of the different folks are wonderful. I just try to imagine how these people musthave looke like at the time of Julius Caesar.

reply

I'm a history teacher, and though both series are full of fiction and playing with timelines, TLK is much more realistic and less ridiculous. I prefer it for a number of reasons, but mostly because Vikings are so silly. It has women becoming earls and fighting and nymphomanic queens and a lot of modern nonsense. That might feel good to the director communicating with a SJW crowd just out to watch a funny show but TLK is at least somewhat realistic.

True,

reply

Agreed.

You should watch the Norwegian short movie "Flukt", you'd find it very underrated if you're interested in history.

Vikings is a more Hollywood-esque series, aimed for a broader, less mature audience. Vikings is based on various historical sources, which are mixed together and attributed to the Danish king Ragnar Lothbrok.

If you want an idea of norse myths and historical events, at a fast pace*, but do not care for detail - then Vikings is for you.

*(Fast pace due to centuries of events compressed into a single lifetime)

The Last Kingdom is a fictional story based on a historical setting, albeit it's description of norse, non-christian culture is much more authentic to the sagas and more congruent in it's deliverance. This makes it more believable, while also making the characters less eccentric, which will not satisfy many adolescents.

If you don't care about actual historical events, but would rather want an idea about norse culture and the clash between Christians and norsemen in England, The Last Kingdom is for you.

I'm a bit of norse history buff, so i follow both - but there are lots of details in Vikings that irritate me. Contrary, i'm often pleasantly surprised while watching The Last Kingdom, as the writers really did their homework. On the other hand, i more often find myself losing focus while watching The Last Kingdom, as the characters are less eccentric than those in Vikings, and simultaneously more believable. I see that as a flaw in me, not in the series.

TLK also does the English a great service, by redressing the balance somewhat after the awful portrayal in Vikings.

The Anglo Saxons weren't idiotic cowards who ran at the sight of half a dozen unarmoured men holding little hand axes, they fought in the shieldwall the same as the Danes did and the huscarls were as fierce as any viking. The armour also, about three hundred years too early!

reply

Very good point but sadly did not stop the Normans (sod those Viking ancestors)having the last "laugh".

reply

Vikings is better. Not only the show, specially the first 2 seasons, explains a LOT of the vikings way of life, thinking, folklore and legend, but it is without a doubt the better cast, clothing, realistic battles and better directed.

Last Kingdom is based on some facts yes, but the ridiculous sizes of armies, some odd looking norsemen that look straight out of a cartoon, the small landscape feeling of it all, worse acting and worse directing, makes this the worst of the two.

It's like they ran out of budget sometimes, it is a great series nonetheless, but Vikings has been the best since season 1, surpassing IMO the boring GOT where action practically happens in the end of each season.

If you love Viking culture & myth, with a mix of truth & fantasy, but with realistic battles, then go for Vikings. But if you really love the time period, watch both, they are both very good.

Davish Wulf - Couldn't disagree with you more on every point you made.

Funny, I thought "Vikings" had the odd looking ones, with Vikings that dress like a motorcycle gang with punk rock, or modern hipster hairstyles.

reply

Vikings is very stylish and obviously has a bigger budget, but TLK is grittier and more historically accurate.
