Boxoffice.com just released their newest forecast....
A month ago they had AIW opening to 215 Million
Last Week they upped it to 225 Million...
Now this week upped it to between 235 Million to 255 Million....
were getting to Star Wars TFA territory now....
I must admit, I still think Its going to open around 215 M....and Would have thought 2 days ago that boxoffice.com's 235 Million dollar prediction was way to high....IF.....I didnt read one of the most astonishing stats I've ever read the other day...
AIW is breaking every Fandango Record and They recently reported....AIW is out selling the Last 7 MCU film COMBINED in Presale tickets...
that is simply beyond belief...especially considering 6 of the last 7 Opening Have been HUGE....you have 2 of the biggest ever with Black Panther opening at 201 and Civil War opening at 179 M...then you got GOTG, Thor 3 and Spider Man HC all opening over 115 M...
and AIW has outsold all these films COMBINED!
I literally dont know what to expect at this point, I was certain anything between 200 and 215 was where AIW was going to land....Now...I just dont know...
If reviews are great, If there is a Universal sense this movie is great and Lived up to its potential....IMO ALL BET are off box office wise...we may really be talking about it topping 250 M+
what are your current Opening Weekend Predictions for AIW?
I think Rt will def play a part. It WILL be a huge opening. If the Rt score is high, above 90, expect the box office to go higher. Marvel has the opportunity to take over Star Wars. Yes Star Wars will always be Star Wars, but the divide on the current state of Star Wars will affect its perception.
I know both are owned by Disney, but you have different studios and writers etc. I want this to beat Star Wars TFA. I hope it will. If BP was so close, and this looks to be even bigger, I think it will beat TFA and be the highest grossing marvel film yet. But this film has to be really good. If its good but too depressing (too many deaths), then I could see fans not wanting to see it multiple times. I get why Disney makes sure these films are more chill. People dont want to go see depressing films. That is why I think the film will have high stakes but the heroes will prevail. That will gurantee repeat viewings. And given that Deadpool comes out in 3 weeks, Marvel Studios wants to make a huge chunk of change in those 3 weeks.
Panther was lucky that it didnt really have much competition in its first 5 weeks or so. But back to your point, I think this will almost reach Star Wars TFA, but if the RT score is very high and the buzz increases even more, I think it will BEAT TFA~
The opening will be huge and I would expect it to be around 225. As we all know, a record breaking opening weekend doesn't necessarily mean a good movie so I just hope it doesn't suck.
Yeah it may have the biggest opening ever, however, I don't think it is going to beat Force Awakens in the long run or come close to it. It seems that everyone in the US saw that movie lol
If any movie has even the slightest chance of accomplishing what TFA did, at least in the foreseeable future, then my money is on Infinity War. Yes, it’s somewhat hard seeing it reach $800+million domestically (especially since Infinity War, unlike TFA, will have some competition three weeks in), but you never know.
Now I won’t place a bet on this, however if any movie can challenge TFA in terms of domestic earnings, then I do believe IW stands a good chance. Avengers 4 probably isn’t out of the question, either.
Avengers IW has officially sold 50 Million dollars worth of presale tickets and is only behind TFA...
the interesting part is...
TFA and Avengers IW have to be very close now....Because on November 21 2015..reports came out that TFA's had past 50 Million in presales...
Meaning that with about 28 days before TFAs release, It had 50 Million in Presales sold
and now reports hit that Avengers IW is also at 50 M With 14 days before its release.
So the force Awakens clearly is still ahead, but we at least now know AIW is close to TFA
the other part in the report, states AIW is destroying TFA and every other movie in total awareness and First choice tracking...meaning Disneys marketing campaign is really hitting with the general public
IMO 200 Million + is guaranteed now...and anything between 210 to 260 Million is in play...
IMO Reviews and general consensus is going to be the thing the decides if AIW breaks TFAs OW record...If AIW gets over 90% on RT and the consensus is this movie truly is Great and worth the wait and build up...I think its going to break the OW record...
If it doesnt, if it just gets good reviews, something like 75 to 80 % on RT...I dont think it breaks the record
Sigh In am sick of these Marvel films. The superhero genre is way too saturated for me at this point. Have I enjoyed some of the MCU films yes, but watch this is just going to be another cliff hanger like all the rest. The MCU films focus on building sequels before anything else most of the time.
The MCU films focus on building sequels before anything else most of the time.
^^^ then you May LOVE Avengers IW 3 and 4...Because Marvel Studios has guaranteed every storyline and Arks Will conclude and Payoff in these 2 films...
Basically everything has been building to this, The MCU will drastically change after this, and given the facts that Many of The MCUs biggest actors contracts are up and are on record saying they are not coming back or renewing their contracts, It not only makes sense, But becomes a MUST for Marvel Studios to Conclude Storylines and Character Arks in these 2 films..
it seems by your post, you simply just dont like the MCU and thats fine...But if you at all want to give these films a chance, Its seems Avengers IW 3 and 4 may in fact be the 2 films you will like most considering they are guaranteed to do exactly what you want(Give finality and not end with a cliff hanger setting up future films)...but again based on your post, I dont think you want to give these films a chance, It seems your mind it made up, so why even watch, Fox is making some good CBM lately...they may be your best bet at this point, Maybe the DCEU films? I liked MOS and Wonder Woman...BvS, Suicide Squad and Justice League were complete disastrous(IMO) though...
I've liked some Mcu entries like Iron Man, Avengers and Black Panther. Black Panther was my favorite simply because it's self contained. It stands on its own.
The mcu in my book became too saturated. Like I said it's driven by money and setup. That's why I loved Blade Runner 2049 so much. It's focus was on being a film first than setting up ten sequels.
It feels like with the mcu you are watching a tv show rather than a film. It's like watching a tv show that while it has gems in the series it's stuffed with needless filler that bogs it down bad.
Sorry but that's why I view other comic book movies in a higher light.
Sorry but that's why I view other comic book movies in a higher light.
^^^
no need to be sorry ...everyone has and is entitled to their own opinions...
I just respect that you state them as opinions...most people who dont like the MCU films....
try to their opinions the end all be all...try to say "Nope everyone else is wrong and I'm right"
I'm a huge CBM fan and MCU fan...
I've liked/Loved the Majority of the MCU films...but there are a few that I simply Hate...Iron Man 3, Thor 2, and Age Of Ultron are Massive Disappointments to me...
Heres how I rank the MCU films-
Great To ALL TIME Great-
The Avengers
Captain America The Winter Soldier
Civil War
Guardians Of The Galaxy
Iron Man
Very Good, Almost Great-
Thor Ragnarok
Black Panther
Thor(I'm In The Minority here, I loved Thor 1)
Doctor Strange
Above Average to Good
Ant-Man
Guardians Of The Galaxy 2
Spider-Man Homecoming
Captain American TFA
Average to Slightly Above Average-
Iron Man 2
The Incredible Hulk
Disappointing to Bad-
Iron Man 3
Age Of Ultron
Thor 2
My top 10 Favorite CBMs of all time are
1. The Avengers
2. The Dark Knight
3. Logan
4. Captain America 2
5. Civil War
6. Guardians Of The Galaxy
7. Deadpool
8. The Dark Knight Rises
9. Man Of Steel
10. Thor Ragnarok/Wonder Woman
*IMO The Avengers, The Dark Knight and Logan are the clear cut 3 greatest CBMs ever made...I have no problem With whatever order these films are ranked, If some had Logan #1, The Dark Knight #1 or The Avengers #1, I wouldnt argue...
Well I'm glad you are respectful also. Your top ten list is interesting. I like most on your top ten with the exception of Thor Ragnarok and Man of steel.
Well I enjoy Thor Ragnarok but I overall thought it was decent but nothing great. I eould not rewatch it. Man of Steel I can't stand. Maybe it's because I'm a huge Donner fan. I love Superman the movie and Superman 2.
Man of steel to me was a shameless cash grab that recycles Donner's Superman plot but makes it dull and dreary.
Basically put Batman Begins, Superman 1 and 2 in a blender and you get Man of Steel. Rather than rely on original ideas it retreads things heavily and offers nothing new.
On top of it lacking originality it's not even done well in my book. I respect that you like it I just don't. I knew after that any sequel would be awful and low and behold I was right.
Batman Begins worked because it didn't retread things Burton did it did something with the character we had not seen on the big screen before.
I can completely understand why anyone wouldnt like Man Of Steel...
I like it, But it even for me has some Big and unforgivable problems...
"Tornadocide" is simply one of the biggest and most pathetic failures in CBM history...
But for me personally, I'm not hard to please, I enjoy Big, Huge Action and Special effects...and thats why I like MOS...I love The Battle of Smallville action Sequence and The end fight Between Zod and Superman is my favorite "Fight" in any CBM ever...
Story wise, PLot Wise, Character Wise...MoS has massive problems, But I can overlook most and enjoy the film..
I also LOVE Batman begins...Its in my top 10 BEST CBM's ever list....Just not My "FAVORITE"
My top 10 Best CBM's of all time is somewhat different-
1. Logan
1. The Dark Knight
^Complete Tie, I feel the both are the absolute best and PEAK of The CBM genre for different reasons
2. The Avengers.
3. Iron Man
4. Captain America 2
5. Deadpool(IMO Maybe the best anyone has ever done capturing the feel on A COMIC BOOK and Literally Nailing the exact Character )
6. Civil War(IMO The Plot of this movie and Specifically the Storyline the causes the Split between Cap and Tony is incredible...The Event that cause the Divide between these 2 characters is something so deep and So Unforgivable these 2 characters relationship can never be the same again, at the end when Climax Occurs, you can completely understand All Sides, feel for All sides, You can completely understand why Tony wants to Kill Bucky and Will go through Cap to get to him, you can completely understand Why Cap is defending his Friend at all costs, and You can even feel for Bucky after just watching him do something as Evil as Kill Starks parents, For Me, You literally couldnt make a "Vs" movie any better)
7. The Dark Night Rises
8. Batman Begins
9. Guardian Of The Galaxy
10. X-Men DOFP
See I can see how you would like it from an action perspective. However for me I value character depth and story over action. Action is just the icing on the cake. Not a bad top ten list I disagree with some I will show you mine.
10. Guardians of the Galaxy. A movie which by all accounts should not have worked but it did.
9. Iron Man The Start of the MCU
8. The Avengers The team up film that worked.
7. X-men Days Of Future Past A great film. Honestly on another day it could easily crack my top 5.
6. Sin City I hate how this film is being forgotten about. This in my book is even better than Deadpool. The comic is literally on the screen. It is not an adaption but a translation.
5. Black Panther A MCU film that stands on it's own two feet. A solid villain with a good soundtrack two rare things for an MCU film.
4. Batman Begins the prime example of a reboot done correctly.
3. Spider-man 2 Again I hate how this one is forgotten about. This one has what a lot of other superhero films lack heart and magic.
2. The Dark Knight Rises the concluding saga to Nolan's trilogy. As good as Dark Knight not quite but a satisfying finale
1. These three Logan, Superman the movie and the Dark Knight.
I would ultimately give it to the Dark Knight overall. Here is the thing though Donner is the true start of all these things. Superman the movie got so many things right. Think that movie had a tone of ambition for when it was made. It got a huge cast, huge budget and boy did it deliver. It is cinematic magic at it's finest. It showed that adapting a hero on the big screen was possible. The reason I do give it to the Dark Knight is because it will probably age better. Superman the movie as much as I love it is dated in certain aspects.
Logan does something new with the genre and that is give definitive closure to a long running hero. Not the kind of closure The Dark Knight Rises gave but an actual bittersweet sad ending. It had guts and that is why I love it.
The Dark Knight not to retread on everything said before but what more can be said that has not already been said?
Initially I think the idea was that this would be a cliffhanger ending and then conclude with the next one, but the buzz now is that this will have some sort of a resolution. It will certainly leave many questions, but be more of a full circle film like the previous Avenger titles rather than say Harry Potter Hallows 1.
I totally understand why you could feel that way. All of the recent CBM's always leave something for a sequel or try to bridge each other which imo it is starting to feel like it is taking away from the directors' or writers' ability to make a complete film in itself. It's like you can't watch the next one without having seen the previous title they released chronologically regardless if it's a different character's film.
I would recommend the next two Avenger films though. They are in a sense the "conclusion" of this one big movie we have been watching over the last decade and post Avengers 4 is suppose to be something new and fresh (as much as superheros smashing each other and destroying things can be new and fresh).
That's essentially what I think. It will be huge even if reviews are bad, but if the RT% score is above 90, or even say 95% or above, that WILL play a part in a bigger box office.
Black Panther Certainly has to help....as much as that movie is LOVED, It certainly helps going into IW...
But for me, I just dont know how realistic it is to expect the same audience that Made Black Panther Over Perform, to show back up for IW....
again we saw this exact same thing with Wonder Woman and Justice League.
Wonder Woman drastically Over Performed Domestically...It gained huge Hype and a real Womens Movement got behind the film , Women who ordinarily wouldnt see CBMs came to see WW because they felt it was important and were proud
But this did NOT carry over to JL just 5 months Later even though Wonder Woman was in the film...Women just didnt see JL as the same type of film, Wonder Woman, had the consensus that It was The First "Female" Superhero film, which was Starred and Director by A Female...The audience that found WW Important and were Proud, just didnt feel the same about JL 5 months
IMO the same Will happen with Black Panther....there is an article where a company did a study where 17 to 20% of the tickets sold to BP were from people who had never seen another CBM in theaters before...that Audience was mainly, OLDER African American and WAY Upper class African American who saw the movie only because they felt it was important and because they were proud...
Black Panther Drastically Over Performed Domestically....that over performance can be almost 100% linked back to its Cultural Impact and the NEW Audience that saw BP that wouldnt see other MCU films or CBMs....
BP became a movie that Made Black People Proud, again It kinda got labeled The first "Black Superhero movie"(even though it wasnt)...but it was the first of this scale...to feature A Black Superhero in The Lead Role, Black Actor in The Lead Role, To feature an Almost Full Black Cast, To Take PLace almost entirely in A Black Country and to be Director by a Black Director...simply put, no Movie or CBM can ever replicate what this film meant to A certain portion of the audience...
I just dont see that 17 to 20% carrying over to AIW....
that 17 to 20% of the audiences equals about 160 Million dollars....
thats means its possible that AIW wont get 160 Million dollars worth of Audience that saw Black Panther...
The Audience, The Older African Americans, and WAY upper Class African Americas that saw Black Panther because they thought it was Important for their Culture and because they were Proud....IMO Will not feel the same about AIW, and probably wont even care, AIW is a film you at least need to see SOME of the other MCU films to at least understand...
This audience could care less about A Giant Purple Alien coming to destroy earth...
Its clear hype is building to an almost never before seen scale with AIW ...Black Panthers Incredible Success can only Help, when you have a film has great and loved has BP LEADING in to AIW, Its only a good thing...
but for me, Theres just simply no logically reason to except or think the same audience that Saw BP is going to show up to see AIW...
or at least that 20%....at least 80% of the Audience that Saw BP should show up to see AIW...
The Comic Book Fan base, The General Public, everyone who loved and enjoyed BP should show up for AIW...which is almost 80% of the audience, which is about 500 to 520 Million dollars in Box office...
I'm just arguing that the 20%, the Audience who ONLY saw BP because of its Cultural Impact will not carry over...
I think AIW Will open between 220 to 250 M....
and Will make between 510 to 600 Million Domestically...
also this isnt Just a AIW thing....
I dont think any CBM from any studio can get the audience BP got...Including Black Panther 2....
Not even Black Panther 2 is going to get that 17 to 20% that NEVER saw another comic book movie before back....
they may get some , but BPs Hype and cultural Impact can not be replicated!
I think Justice League still had the drag of Batman vs Superman affecting it, despite the boost it got from Wonder Woman. (I can't imagine how poorly it would have done without that boost from Wonder Woman.)
IW doesn't have a millstone like BvS around its neck. All of the MCU films have done well.
Imagine someone new to comic book movies sees WW first. They love it. So they go home and say "hmmm let me check out the movie where WW is introduced" and they watch BvS.
Compared to someone new to comic book movies who sees BP first. They love it. So they go home and watch Civil War. See where I'm going with this?
The BP fan gets to see another great movie that actually has a critical moment in their hero's life where his father is assassinated and BP goes after the killer. The WW fan gets to see a shit movie where their hero was basically just along for the ride. So it seems reasonable to me that the BP fan is much more likely to want to see IW than the WW fan wanted to see JL.
