This is the least well known Marvel Movie Character

Why the hell were they allowed to use DC Captain Marvel's name for this character? General audiences have never heard of her.

The name Captain Marvel has a long and sorted history but I will shorten it as much as possible.

Fawcet Comics had a character named Captain Marvel who was a really fast, flying, super strong guy.

DC sued them because he was too much like Superman (while they looked similar, Cap Marvel was actually flying before Supes but DC had stronger lawyers) and that led to Fawcet Comics going under and DC sitting on the rights to Captain Marvel for decades.

In the 70's, Stan Lee realized the name Captain Marvel was no longer under copyright since no comics had been published with that name in decades and created the character Captain Marvel (because hey, they were Marvel Comics, so they needed a Captain Marvel, apparently). Later, this guy got a female counterpart named Ms Marvel; real name: Carol Danvers. There have been several characters at Marvel who used the name Captain Marvel after that as the original guy died, but eventually, Carol Danvers began using the name Captain Marvel (Carol went through several name changes herself in the meantime, btw).

As for DC, they brought back "their" Captain Marvel in the late 70's, but since Marvel was publishing Captain Marvel comics, they used the title "Power of Shazam" when it came time for their Cap Marvel to have his own title. These days, the character goes by Shazam which is why the upcoming movie has that title.

I agree, to me Ms. Marvel is just the source of Rogue's powers and she's in a coma. But Disney and Marvel have managed to get away with murder, the more boring and homogenized the films the better.

reply

I would rather see a Spiderwoman or She Hulk movie.

reply

I would like to see a Madame Web film, where Spiderman, (which is a coming of age story), decides to take orders from an old lady, just like in the cartoon.

reply

And because she's little-known, the fillmakers will feel zero obligation to be true to the source material.

reply

Iron Man, Dr strange, Black panther, GOTG...none of these were popular outside of comic book fans before the movies. Marvel usually makes great movies, this could be great, or it could be below par like black panther. I have more issue with the lead. I think Brie sucks.

reply

That's the thing, the less known a comic character is, the more latitude the filmmakers have. So I think that the fact that nobody knows anything about Captain Marvel except a few nerds is a plus going in.

I am reserving judgement on Larson. I haven't seen her Oscar-winning film (because it sounds so dreary), I've seen her in a couple of things and I can't say she knocked me out, but then they were just "the girl" roles. Hardly anyone can impress in a "the girl" role.

reply

Nobody had ever heard of the Guardians of the Galaxy either. I'd say that worked out alright.

reply

Yeah but Guardians had actually interesting characters played by charismatic actors. This not so much.

reply

Marvel Comics basically stole the name when the Real Captain Marvel was in Legal Limbo.

reply

Or....DC sued the crap out of Fawcett until it was no longer viable to fight then did nothing with the character, allowing the copyright to lapse.

But you know....facts and all that.

reply

You know, I've always wondered about the copyright issues. I know DC had a Captain Marvel and then Marvel has had several characters by the same name, which seems peculiar given the system of copyright law in effect.

Can you or someone give a BRIEF summary?
