PG-13 Horror: What's the Point?

PG-13 horror movies are a joke. Case in point, PROM NIGHT, and OUIJA.

Those movies are what makes the money unfortunately. Teens go to the movies in big groups and these weak horror movies are what they watch. And they don't go to the matinee either.

So imagine like a group of 8-10 teens all pile in to their cars, hyped to watch this crap movie. They pay 12-16$ a ticket (not including food) a piece and it has a decent opening weekend.

This tells the studios that even a lukewarm turd like this still nets them some quick box office cash. The cycle goes on and on

THe thing with PG-13 horror is that it is normally PG-13 to appeal to more demographic which (usually) means that it is usually bereft and devoid of any true terror or imagination. Case in point: When The Ring did well, every studio hurried up and released a bunch of japanese horror remakes to get a cash grab. They were all TERRIBLE, but churned out and PG-13 so more people could see them.
Rated R in THIS day and age normally means that some work was put behind it (unless its a comedy...those are just spewed out left and right). Rated R means the company doesn't care what the MPAA thinks and want to release something they feel deserves to be seen. Look at Deadpool...that was fought for years before the studio allowed it and it was AWESOME! Back in the day, aka the 70s-90s the studios released a bunch of rated R horror that was normally a rip off slasher movie filled with gore and titties. If you notice today most movies, especially horror are devoid of titties. If a movie is rated R in this day and age I feel it will normally be more adult and grounded, not to mention hopefully gory.

Just think: If Quentin Tarentino made a PG-13 movie would it be any good? I mean his dialogue alone warrants an R rating and without that amazing dialogue the movie would be garbage. Not to mention his usual violent expositions...fantastic.

The point of PG-13 "horror" is the flock of obnoxious teenagers who show up to talk loudly among themselves, look at their phones with lights shining brightly, scream because they find it humorous, run up and down the stairs, and, occasionally, smoke weed during the movie.

If this movie was rated R it would be much better! This looked like the next generation of A Nightmare On Elm Street but because they decided to make it PG-13, it'll just cut away at the parts that would've been awesome...

I both agree and disagree. You can still have an effective, creepy horror movie within the parameters of a PG-13 rating. I thought The Others was a great atmospheric film that gave me chills. There are other films that work very well and don't need any excessive gore or nudity to accomplish what they set out to do.

However, OP, what I think you are referring to (and do correct me if I'm off base) are the attempts at continuing the slasher tradition within those restrictions. The original Prom Night was a slasher, which utilized both gore and nudity. The remake was tamed for modern teen audiences. Why? Because several years ago, studios realized that more teens went to horror movies in the theatres, and they decided to cater to them (the little jerks who talk and text through movies and make ruin the experience for the rest of us). Then, they decided that after making more box office that way, they could release unrated home video versions, and make even more money.

Not every horror movie needs to be rated R, but they don't all need to be PG-13 either.

I know, right? Saw 3D is a way better movie than Hitchcock's Psycho because the latter is considered PG 13 today.

I used to think a good horror movie needed a good script, actors and director, but I guess it's all determined by whether or not it can show tits.

Even though my favorite horror movies are R rated, I am perfectly fine with PG-13 horror movies existing.

I remember when I was younger and had an interest in them, every one was R rated, and you have to remember, a lot of young people have very strict and overprotective parents. I was most definitely one of them.

So for people like that, I think one or two should be put out a year, since it gives them a movie to see.

That being said, this movie was very, very bad.

This movie still would have been bad even if it was R-rated.
