I feel bad for Samberg. The movie was a $10.5 million loss for Universal

The budget for this film was $20 million and it only made $9,496,130. So Universal had to eat a 10.5 million loss. The movie tanked so bad it was out for only three weeks! I read somewhere that Universal wanted to pull the movie out of theaters just under two weeks after its release.

I can just imagine the dialogue in the boardrooms or when them damn suits at Universal met up with the actor(s), producers and directors of the film.

They probably kissed Andy Samberg and directors Akiva Schaeffer and Jorma Taccone's ass in person. But behind their backs them suits probably said, "This movie's gonna be a turd at the box office and we're gonna have to find some movies in our catalog to make up for this s*** stain."

Good thing Samberg has a good vibe about him, and that Brooklyn 9-9 is a hit, plus his collecting them checks from doing so much voice work.

You guys gotta realize. When an actor co-produces, writes, and stars in a film as Samberg did with Popstar, it takes a lot out of them mentally and physically. Publicly Samberg played it cool about this film being a big ass flop, but privately you know this film probably *beep* him up.

Some of y'all probably saying that this movie was a filler/who cares vanity project for Andy Samberg and so why are you (me) reading so much into the film? Well, I'll just say that I've followed his career for a while and something inside of me said to write this. That's all I'm trying to say.

He can console himself with it being a fairly decent movie that got deservedly good reviews. If if had been a commercial flop and a failure, quality-wise, I could understand him being pissed.

As it is, at least this film is no 💩/⭐⭐⭐⭐

Universal will do fine. Most movies lose money. Hell, even the last Harry Potter film didn't make any money for the actual studio.

They live off their (very rare) hits, and exist only so that they can walk into parties and tell people all that they have on their plate, including stuff like "We're doing the latest Andy Samberg comedy, it's kind of like This Is Spinal Tap meets Judd Apatow, very edgy, very funny". It's worth 20 mill for them to say that to people.

Anyhoo, movies that cost this little don't have to worry too much, even though as a fan of this flick (and especially Hot Rod) I would've loved for it to do better. But it doesn't have to bring in much more on DVD etc to start earning a little bit of capital, plus it actually brought in good reviews with the studios like to brag about as well.

People go to the movies these days??? Just watch the blue ray from redbox on your 65" HD Tv for $2. It just takes a little patience.

Andy Samberg has been doing this type of comedy for over 20 years. You don't think he can tell the difference between the humor of Brooklyn 911 and Hot Rod, why one is fairly popular and the other is not?

Look at his Digital Short career. More than a few are cultural touchstones, but at least 60 of them are just weird, subversive pieces a small group of people find hilarious. Not to mention the fact that in one of those shorts, he pokes fun at how he and Adam Sandler's "That's My Boy" bombed. I think he's doing fine. He got to make a major motion picture this his closest friends and colleagues.

Now, would he have preferred Popstar to make more than $9M, which is less than Hot Rod? Obviously. But did he expect this to do anything other than possibly break even and connect with a very small, niche audience? No way. He's smarter than that.

He's got Storks and Hotel Transylvania 3 coming out the next year or so, that'll keep him afloat for, I dunno, another 15 years??

fully agreed.

personally i don't think that he even expected this film to be making money, but instead was happy enough to get it made.

Just look at Kevin Smith's last 5 or 6 films. He keeps doing films that he wants to make, just as long as he gets them financed, no matter how much of a flop they are. Not that i would want to compare this brilliant satire to Kev's recent and not so recent experiments.
