Can anybody explain to me what is so great about this movie?

Or what is supposed to be so great? It was an average movie at best, I liked the colors they used throughout the film, the music and choreography was good, the acting was good as well. But WHY is it so GREAT? Giving the rating it has, the movie should become a "timeless classic" but I wouldn´t understand the reason for it, sorry. The story was nothing groundbreaking and the dialogue neither. Those two are some of the most important factors to consider for a movie to be labelled as "great". And at no point of the film I was impressed by a plot twist or maybe a hidden message that could give the viewer a life lesson. It all seemed so flat for me. So I really need an explanation.

i think it is great because we, normal people, are tired of close up images of cutting vagina parts with razor blade.

what's enough is enough.

Just came from it. I thought is sucked big time. Other than Ryan Gosling's charm, and 1 or 2 romantic scenes, it was horrible.

The music and singing was awful. (I play keyboards btw). Ryan's dancing was smooth but in general the choreagraphy was boring, the music was the same theme over and over, and no one really could sing in the movie.

Shocked.

I feel this movie is not worth all those nominations and awards given :( Yes Emma Stone is a great actress ( she really deserved an Oscar nominations), but I don't think Ryan Gosling seriously act in this movie, felt that he have the same expressions (kinda think he look so bored and not excited about anything). Cinematography is great, love the movie tone. The music however is ...well there's a lot of musical movie before and there were far better than this. Movie duration is too long, me and my friend almost felt asleep during the movie. No wonder that this movie only stayed in theaters for less than 2 weeks (in my country).

A film that is gonna win best picture is being called overrated? This is new...

Oh wait, this happens every year.

Just different opinions, if you were not moved by the movie then someone can't really explain what was great if it didn't connect with you.

I thought it was a marvel of a film, very emotional, big and small at the same time.I like the idea of it being a movie about movies and how real life is actually more complicated, a comment on the lie of movies.

I thought all the dialogue scenes were good and funny, maybe it was just me but I think the script overall was very sharp and DC made mostly correct choices and only gets indulgent at slight moments.

Also the ending reminded me of Fantasia, so that is always a plus.

You speak way too much common sense for these boards because, in the end, it IS, as simple as that.

Given the rating it has

When you posted this message it was probably at 8.8. Now it's at 8.5.
I'm proud of imdb'ers. It will sink below 8 during the next year or so.
It's just awards fodder.

you have set a low bar for pride satisfaction.

There seems to be so many musical fanatics in here hatting.

I have barely seen any musicals because honestly I don't fancy the genre as much as others (at some point the singing always takes me away from the narrative and becomes irritating)

But this was perhaps the best picture of the whole year and I really didn't expect that from a musical. Why? Because it stuck to me long after leaving cinema! It reached that sweet spot of empathy with me. I believe it is really hard to achieve that with this genre simply because the characters start singing and dancing in the middle of the dialogue scene when you are trying to focus and just as you engage in the story you go like WHY ARE THEY SINGING? WHAT IS HAPPENING? WHAT AM I WATCHING?

Your complaint is common for those who do not enjoy the traditional musical. Just when you're getting into the story/dialog, another song is enjoined slowing the story's progress. Or at least that's how it feels. This film was more 65/35 dialog to music. The songs also weaved into the story moving it forward.

You know, after weeks on these boards and multiple viewings of this film I am more confident then ever that this is a special film. I'm so tired of the losers who make repeated visits to repeatedly post their hatred of this movie.
Get over it. This is a film that has entertained and is beloved by masses. These masses weren't bullied or brainwashed, the film just resonated deeply with them...the overwhelming majority.

In the end, it doesn't matter. This movie made me feel. It touched me and that is enough.

I understand that one size does not fit all. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. But the haters, the writers that felt it was the most overrated movie EVER or the singing and dancing were horrible or the ending "sucked" or I walked out early(right)and OMG this movie is rated 8.5(the world is going to come to an end)...well, your subjective impressions may be valid but they are clearly the outlier.

This film will receive the Academy Award for Best Film and it deserves it!

On the other hand, I am fortunate these boards will be closed by then so I can avoid derision in the event I am mistaken.
